hirondelle...thank you for those photos, and I agree with you that usage was most likely mixed.
But some are Trucks...not Quad Tractors...so, very different tires. And, every single one of the pics you posted appears to be Chevrolets! lol And they may have used a different tire from the Fords, I don't know. The argument was possibly restricted to Fords and I admit, I have a 1941 photo of a factory fresh Ford Quad chassis (with no body fitted yet), and it has the directional cut tires. That last truck (photo)is prewar...maybe not even military. License Plate reads 1927. I don't recognize the logo badge on the grille. There was a company here in Brantford Ontario producing Trucks...but I don't know their logo. ... re the release... the kit, and package are pretty much ready for publish. I finished the cover yesterday. But first, I have prepared to reissue (at ecardmodels) my Autocar kits... I have those all ready to go. And then, after that. I will publish the FAT to the store (before Aug.) I'll see if I can get it into papermodelshop.com any sooner.

"Except for a lot of modelers and self proclaimed "expurts" who are all pointing out that my model is incorrect. I see no reason why tires could not have been changed at some point in the service life of a vehicle?"
Oh dear. Rivet counters strike again. Ignore them Dave! I have served in an active war and I am always bemused by the rivet counters who explain what is right and what is wrong for that particular conflict! Bemused, because most of the time they are wrong... A tale I often tell relates to rivet counters, and the paint schemes used for the aircraft and vehicles in the conflict I was in.
I suppose it fulfils some need people have. So it goes....! Even though reality is mostly different! ------------------------------------ Sgt - your Quad has an odd tyre that does not match! You are on a charge! Stop the war and proceed immediately to the never-ending source of correct tyres, and ensure they are all the same, and have the correct tread, of the correct colour and at the correct angle. This is a war man, and vehicles cannot be improperly shod at any time.

Yeah some trucks in the Canuck factory pix. Indexing on them is a bit of a giveaway :P
I was looking at the contemporary variations on tires. i.e. How many tire manufacturers/in house variants were there at the time...? From the pix I've seen of Canadian manufacturing by Ford, Chevy, Chrysler, GM & The 4 Wheel Drive Auto Co, there are relatively few tread variations across a variety of vehicles based on the same/similar chassis options. Likely that the designs on the FATs from multiple builders were sharing a common pool of tread patterns. Seeing that GB FAT in N Africa with mixed tires per axle vs the mostly directional patterns shown in pix from Canadian factories, (Incl the attached Ford.) & the museum examples with non diagonal tread tells the story quite well. The final truck is 1937. Syd Swallow of Ford Canada - Ford 15cwt 4x2 Prototype 1. * slightly OT, Anyone who plays wargames is very familiar with the illogical restrictions found in the brains of both devs & users. I well recall an argument between Devs & future-users about a particular much desired in-game WW2 weapon which the devs refused to include 'cos it wasn't there'. User - my grandfather fought right there & used one... Dev - That proves nothing we use historical databases ...blah blah |

Hirondelle...
yeah, I just mistyped on the 1927...1937 (I said it was prewar) And now that I see the 'V8' logo better, I can understand its a Ford. I actually agree with that Dev. So called 'first hand' knowledge is usually flawed. Thats why I like photos! But, in this case, I didn't pay enough attention to photos it seems. First, I start designing a Ford using lots of Chevrolet reference photos. [In my defense, it was pointed out to me 'the differences between the Ford and Chevy bodies...' which were very basic and easy to spot. But it turns out the differences in the Chassis were a lot more complicated!] And I ignored the issue of the Tires in favour of what I had already successfully built. But some Dev's get it wrong too I play World of Warships, and I am constantly annoyed by the lack of realism in a supposedly 'realistic simulation'. The boats in this game span the early half of the 20th century. They put a lot of effort and noise around the research and efforts to recreate historic warships from that period but then go treat it like an arcade game. Destroyers are the worst example...the bane of every Battleship driver (in the game). In real life, these Destroyers carried 4-8, maybe 12 max., Torpedoes in total. And if they did have enough for a reload, it took 30-60 minutes to effect that reload. In the game, however, most Destroyers can volley a dozen torpedoes at once (its called torp soup) and can reload (in about 60 seconds) unlimited times during a 20 minute match. So yeah, I wish, Devs would say 'because it wasn't there!'.

You cannot please everyone all the time, so they say. I think yours was the only rational decision considering the lengths you go to. Whichever way it is built it is bloody marvelous.
PS. As long as you can be happy in your own mind you have a good result. |

okay...I just managed to get the kit into my store...Paper Model Shop Home... today.
All the info is here: 1/16 CMP Ford FAT (Field Artillery Tractor) from Dave's Card Creations I listed my Autocar kits earlier today (at ecardmodels), so I am going to wait a week before I post again at ecardmodels. If you want to pick it up now, do so at papermodelshop (link above). I appreciate it. If you want to wait until its published at ecardmodels, thats good too. I will appreciate that.

Quote:
(effort/perceived reward) x (target market/devs caliber) = end product Good to see the iconic FAT with any tires & nice to be able to put mixed tires on to show the fortunes of war. So....the on-road tires will be a supplement eh? |

Something has come to my attention (as I pack this model for an upcoming event)...
it seems the body sides have buckled slightly...curved a little bit... where the rear Storage Hatch Doors are attached. These are of course just layered parts. I don't know if I grabbed and squeezed it, or it is the glue, or the double layering, or just my build. It appears to be more prominent on one side of the vehicle...the other side barely has any deflection. I think it would make sense to have added a bit of strengthening material to the backside of each body side panel in this area. Like this... My model is finished, so I can't make any changes, but if you are building the model, you might want to consider this. I've made up a diagram and template to help you add some material, or add something to reinforce this area. PDF http://www.mediafire.com/file/4jekok...e_mod.pdf/file

Discovered a small error in the Instruction diagrams (of the FAT model)
Please be aware of this (refer to the image below) and make a note to your printed Instruction pages. If you wish a replacement kit, just log in to your ecardmodels account and re-download the model. If you bought it directly from me, you can go to PaperModelShop.com and download the Instructions update sheet (in the Extras section) The error: In the Wheel/Tire assembly instructions, please not where the "tabbed joiner rings" are fitted. The wrong Tire parts are/were indicated.
