Fitting the Vertical Tail

I glued the former in place allowing enough room for the connecting strip (you'll see soon)
You can also see how you have to curve the lower part.

Then attach the other side, mating up the bottom curve and gluing all around the edge.
I also flared out the leading portion of the stabilizer which fits over the top of the fuselage.

Look cmags! edge gluing!!!

Another angle shows all the built in curves that you must achieve to get it to fit over the fuselage.
I also added a small joiner to strengthen the connection in the lower seam. It made it a little thick, but I didn't want the seam to separate.

and this picture shows you that "connecting strip" I mentioned earlier.
There is a strip included in the kit...I forgot to print it...so I just made up this fuselage extension which will insert into the Vertical Tail.
(The fuselage end is still quite rounded in this pic, you have to squish it almost flat to make it fit the Tail section)

and with a some careful persuasion and a little glue
I eased the Tail over that extended strip and onto the fuselage.
You have to kinda squeeze the fuselage flat and into the same shape as the Tail.

You can also see I have the horizontal support in place,
just needed to cut the premarked area to allow a tight fit of the support.

Then fold the Horizontal tails and glue them...
make sure to fold over and glue the small tab which forms the diagonal at the rear of the stabilizer.

Then apply a little glue to the support and slip the Horiz. Stabilizers on
and butt them up to the fuselage.

Heres the completed Tail and Fuselage dry fitted to the assembled Wing.
Looks like a Spit now!

Wingspan is just over 14"
so its a nice size model!

Haven't attempted the attaching of the Wing yet...

fiddling with a few other small bits first.
heres the lower radiator housing (there are two, a right and a left)

I'm not building the Gear...I wanted to make some sort of stand
and have an "in-flight" Spitfire
but I will still need the Tail gear, so heres the necessary parts

and the assembled parts over a Paper Clip for support.
I used one of those vinyl coated Paper Clips.
(Not sure how much i need to fit into the fuselage, but I'll trim it off later.)

Instead of using the middle card disc for the wheel, I used some thick black card...which also gave me a lot more thickness to the wheel.

okay, time to wrap this up
(in case anyone is still awake! lol)

the part I was dreading the most...
the flared panel that joins the wing to the fuselage.

Its tricky and since this is the first one I have done,
it took me a while to get it in place.

All I can say is take your time, dry fit, dry fit, dry fit...
until you figure out the curves and bends.
Its got a few compound curves and takes a bit of patience.

I didn't get it perfect...as usual, my normal rush and glue
but as I said, with a little more patience...

I decided that I needed to start at the very trailing edge and glue the upper and lower parts together to lock that spot.

Then I just sort of worked my way forward, gluing it down as I went.
Until I reached the leading edge of the wing.

You can see I distorted the the panel below the fuselage a little
(I thought it was just gonna be covered anyway)
and that led to a fit issue for this flared panel.

Once I got both Wing panels in place, I flipped it over
and finished the Wing underside by attaching the Radiator housings
and that little center scoop thing!

Pretty simple pieces, don't really take much explaining,
the photos probably tell you more!

Theres also two bump things that go on the top side of the Wings.
("bump things' is actually an RAF technical term...I can't really explain it, its too complicated)

and to finish off the Wings attach the two cannon housings
and the stubby covers.
Stubby covers inserted into a small opening cut into the wing
and the Cannons just glue over the leading edge.

Last thing I had to do was glue all the exhaust tips in place.
I would recommend folding the side of each exhaust tip under a little tighter and reducing the overall size of each piece,
they seem a little big to me when assembled as I have done.

Looks a little better from a distance.

and thats it!
Its hanging up and I'm moving on to my next project!

The Grey Nurse and the three other Spits in this Series
will be in the store (ecardmodels) shortly!
Chris has the files and will get them listed as soon as he can.

GORGEOUS!

Great build, man! The Grey Nurse is one of the prettiest paint schemes to appear on a Spit, in my opinion.

yup its not a bad model...like Marek's Mustang, it has its issues.
but the overall shape is very good and the repaint adds a lot of visual effect that helps you look past some of the inadequacies.

only real area of frustration would probably be the wing to fuselage assembly:
-get the internal formers fitted cleanly and with nicely shaped and leveled edges.
-fit the center section skin properly and then mate up the wing skins cleanly.
-fit the wing assembly tightly to the fuselage to allow the "skirt" to fit tightly.
-the attachment and fitting of the skirt that joins the fuselage to the wing is going to be a lot easier if all these prior steps are dealt with properly.
if I built another, I might experiment with a slightly larger "skirt" and trim it to fit as I went.

Hopefully we will get to see some other builds of this and/or the other Spits in the series.

thanks for this info; I want to build Marek's Israeli Spit- and now, I'll have to add your repaint to the list!

And I'm with you, Dave- wing fillets give me fits every time.

The model looks great, Dave! Your recolor adds a lot to the appeal of this kit.
