Fuel Truck and WW2 Diorama accessories

Transfering over some of my posts from ecardmodels of this design
in case anyone is interested in following this.
Obviously suggestions, input, ideas and criticisms are expected, thats why I decided to post it here.

I got the urge to design a simple Fuel Truck, and maybe do a Diorama with one of my B-24 repaints (1-50 scale).

...this turned into a more complicated design

...and now the idea of producing a Diorama Accessory Pack
that Chris could add to the store.

Anyway, for now, I am attempting to design and test build a GMC 6x6 style Military Truck (Fuel Tanker version)
and its turning out to be a lot of fun and a great learning experience .

I have very limited design skills and experience,
I do not have any 3D modeling programs,
my designs are purely imagined and calculated in my head,
then produced in flat 2D vector art
and test built and tweaked until things fit!

So, heres some of the important stages of the build so far (as pulled from my ecardmodels thread)
and where I stand.

tell me what you think...

This was the first reference image I started with

I now have numerous photos of actual trucks and details of various components
and have established a basic design plan
based on this model plus the original 1940s GMC CCKW-353 Truck
and some of my own artistic license.

I am designing at 1/50 scale, which makes many components very small.
This also rules how I approach the design of some parts, since they will be difficult to assemble at this scale.

I think I also intend to include a 1/33 version of the Truck (in the files)
when its all done.

here goes with the previous posts (at ecardmodels):

as a result of links to new reference images
I have thrown out my first attempt at a design!

thanks a lot!!!

but...
I have started work on a second version
that is coming along nicely.

with the knowledge I gained from the first artwork,
I was able to lay down the basic elements pretty quickly.

and as you can see in the beta test pics I have some minor tweaking to do,
but the overall shapes fit together nicely.
my biggest error is in the cab interior, which I made too small.

its very hard to judge scale when you are working in vector art.
...a part, that fills my screen, may be in reality only 1 or 2mm tall
and so, microscopic adjustments on the screen are big changes in reality!

what you see in the pics, is 4.5" long (about 1/50 scale)

right now I am stumped with how to tackle the chassis or underbody.
and how to attach the wheel and axle assemblies.
I'd like to design more detailed axle and suspension components
but the small scale makes it too difficult to build these parts.

Currently the truck does have a frame...two simple frame rails that run front to back
and the body sits on top of this frame.
(I'll post some pics of the frame when I get it test built.)

Jan. 24 2010

I did some rework on the Truck yesterday and did another test print and started to assemble some new parts.
I didn't get very far with that assembly last night, more to come.

Once again, I have areas that need a little more tweaking
and I have parts that go together much better!

I tweaked the "fuel tank cylinder"
...slight resize on the outer skin, verified the position of the lettering and visible half of the tank,
made sure the internal former (3 parts) fits the skin properly...and it all went together nicely!

I tweaked the frame rails and assembled those...two small adjustments to make:
the front section needs to be shorten about .1mm (maybe .2mm)
and the cutout area for the Cab is right? wrong? I haven't determined yet (until I sit the cab in place).

Fitted the Hood and Fender/Running Boards assembly...which all fitted well.
Although I have a cutout area in the center, which doesn't need to be cut out - so I will have to adjust that (and maybe put the green colour back in).

I'm concerned about the underside of the fender/running boards...they need to be coloured.
I don't want to add a double layer because that will make it all too thick, and I don't like the idea of coloring that much area - so I am thinking I should add some small pieces that can be trimmed and shaped and glued in place at the end (to cover the exposed white)? Then I could leave it up to the builder to hand colour or install the extra pieces?

Anyway, maybe today I'll try to fit the newly modified cab parts and see how that works.
I also have some parts for the wheels and supporting axles to try.

In response to discussions regarding the "Grill Guard" and Headlight design:

well thats why I like to give options

I always add "optional" parts to build things as is, or with extra 3D effect.

for this Truck, I have created the "grill guard" with headlights in the grill.
Theres a front and back to the "grill guard" that you could leave as is.

or you can start adding the light housings for the full 3D effect.

I was just hoping to find another option instead of the petal domes,
but they seem to be the best option.

so this is the final artwork
(although I still need to add final textures, colours and weathering to things)...

...another test build last night and no new surprises! lol thats good!

-new tank worked well and fits nicely into the body!

-new cab interior fits well with only very minor trimming, so final adjustments will be made.
-dash fits nicely, although assembling a steering column at this scale will be a challenge!
-new windshield worked nicely!

-axle "boxes" seem to be a simpler and effective method of attaching the wheel assemblies.

...got more tweaks and mods to make, but I'm happy with how this is evolving so far. This is turning out to be a lot of fun!

Still haven't tried the new "grill guard" or the headlight pots...sorry
Have a simple front bumper to attach.
Need to design some seats and a template for the Roof frame (simple wire construction I think?)
I think I might include a "preformed soft top" roof...hmmmm?

[new pics show last nights test build, sitting on some pennies for scale reference]

today Jan.26, 2010

not a lot to report this time, many of the last adjustments I have made
are to the print file and minor tweaks to parts.

I did try a little assembly of the "Grill Guard" and headlights.
(unfortunately, I have emptied my ink cartridges and I am using up surplus cartridges I have laying around...so colours are wrong or missing on many parts!)

the Grill worked okay...cut it out, fold it over, glue it
and it mounts to the front of the truck nose...simple

I assembled the two small Headlight pots - using the petal assembly.
Yes...they are small.
no...it wasn't very difficult.
if I took a little more time, I could do a much better job, but they really weren't very difficult to do!
and since there are only two of them, I think its a workable option.
(at 1/33 scale, they will be even easier!!)

I also attached the bumper...but realized it was the prototype bumper
and is the wrong size for the frame rails
...the new version should actually fit a little better.
the newer version also has two sides, so the inside shows coloured too!

I also assembled the front axle "box" which works fine,
just like the rear dual axle "box".
Only issue is whether to pre-mark the frame for attachment
or suggest that the builder assembles the box/axles & wheels
and then positions them onto the already assembled Truck frame/body (to guaranty a proper looking position)?

oh and I also designed (not shown) a roof!
looks sorta like a canvas roof, that is an optional part.
Should fit over the metal Roof frame and windshield loosely or can be glued in place.

will you be making wheel chocks, bomb hoists, or anything along that order?

actually i have been looking for ideas regarding the types of accessories to include in this kit...

and I just added "wheel chocks" to the list!

and I will have to take a look at "engine hoists"
and see if thats an option too.

thanks!!

cool beans dude! Do ya need any help with test building? I don't know how well I could do the bigger stuff, but anything small I'd be more than happy to lend a hand!
