I think, and I do try to keep that in check, that even if it turns out to be
a two page model, using the curved surfaces would be best. And, it
should be in scale with the viper.

If needed, you could shrink the viper to make it more in scale with the raider.

I don't want to shrink the Viper model.
I made it close to same scale as the Galileo Shuttlecraft.
Its also not an easy model to build, so any smaller would make it too tough.
I really don't want to do that.

I was forced to make the Eagle Transporter much smaller scale (than any other Koolwheelz Space Craft model).
But thats because its such a big craft.
And it still ended up as a two-sheet model!!

Eagle will be the third two-sheet model...and I don't want to keep up this trend!

What I am saying is, the Raider must be smaller scale, and hopefully only one sheet
or I won't be completing it.
Thats basically what I am suggesting and asking (in my long winded post).

I agree with you Ray, if I can make a curvy surface model work, I would rather.
But the angled flat surfaces are still a good idea.

I'm just glad to hear about a Cylon Raider model, no matter which way.

Thanks,
Gary

yes or No?
The problem with that is, the Raider model will be way too big for a Koolwheelz model.

The Cylon ship is about a third longer than the Viper.
Something like 35 foot (Raider) to 27 foot (Viper).
And the Raider is supposed to 45 feet wide.
I doubt even my simplified model can fit onto two sheets at that scale!?.

Point is...I would have to make the Cylon Raider about half the scale of the Viper model.
They would be similar dimensions as a model, making them way different in real scale size.
Is this a reason NOT to bother with this model?
Well, as you once said: "If you haven't learned by now that I throw accuracy and specs out in favour of simplicity and my own design..."

So, thanks to my inner smart-aleck, there's that argument for keeping it one-page.

Personally, I have always been a big fan of the one-page designs. It goes way beyond "hey-I'll-just-shrink-this-huge-model-down". The model has to be designed to be that small (parts simplified, details printed rather than add-on, etc). That speaks to the skills of the designer.

I see three options:

1) Make it a however-many-pages-are-necessary model. This would let it be in scale with the Viper (but would also go against the "heart" of the KoolWheelz concept).

2) Make it one sheet, but include directions on much to enlarge the Raider to match the Viper if desired. One problem with idea is that someone who tries this at home will have to do some parts breakout and rearranging to print on a home printer. might be a little daunting for some people.

3) Include information on how much to scale down the Viper to match. One problem might be that the Viper would be difficult at a smaller scale.

With all due respect, you HAVE to do a Cylon raider if you're doing a Viper!

<edit> Saw your above response after I posted mine. So, option three is off the table, ignore it.

Well, even if the raider is a smaller scale, the builder could upscale it to fit with the viper if they so choose. Easy enough.

My 2 pence worth - you don't have to make the Cylon Raider the same scale as the Viper. What about a 'forced perspective' diorama ? You could have a Viper to the fore and a Raider behind (on its 6) coming in to attack. Nice starfield backdrop, or even a portion of the Galactica. It could look like a 'still'.

I think you should do the Raider small with a footnote of 'enlarge by xx% to be in scale with the Viper'

There are a lot of paper model creators who no longer design. Christopher Roe is one of my favorites in this category. I don't have my Reaver any more (gave it away), but after I built it, I played around with trying to smooth out the facets, very unsuccessfully

There are some strange connections in life...
even stranger ones in paper modeling.

I'm have been playing around with the idea of a Cylon Raider (Koolwheelz style) for quite some time.
I used to own the Monogram Cylon Raider model kit.
I just designed my own Centurion Tank paper model.

Go figure.
