A member of the Paper Ship Modelers Facebook group, Amon Finn, has just finished his all scratch build of the USS Olympia. Side view pic below.

The pic set, build notes etc. and his short essay can be seen here > https://www.facebook.com/amon.finn.9...3680170&type=3

So, Jim, did anything come of this?
Its a very pretty boat.
Reminds me of a similar Boat I own in World of Warships...the German Emden.
I love it!

...
Can I sidetrack slightly?
Since the Texas was also mentioned in this thread (as a lacking card model subject)
I'd thought I would show this project of mine from a couple of years back...

World of Warships had a contest to build a "model" of the Texas.
Prizes include a Texas and Commander to use in the game,
as well as a special Texas Medallion.

The "model" idea was completely open...the overall winner was a stitched, plush Texas about 2 foot long!
Another entry was a Lego Texas, and there was a Wooden Block Texas
...there was even one made from Bananas and other fruit!

Anyway, it was a no brainer that I would do something with paper,
but I had very little time (a couple of weeks if I remember correctly).
No time to design and build an entire ship model.

So...since I really wanted that Medallion...I decided to build my own.
About twice the size of the real Medallion, but to scale.
And I layered about a dozen prints to create an embossed 3D medallion.

I once had an animated Gif of the rotating Coin, so you got a better 3D look at it,
but I can't seem to find it. So, I'll just post a couple of photos.

No...I didn't win a thing in the contest.
But I really like how the model turned out.

Nice work Dave! If you hadn't said you made it I would have believed it was the real thing.

of course we are...
but we're more interested what THIS thread is about here!

Jim started this thread back in 2011
and we haven't seen him around since last month,
so we are all just waiting with baited breath
and biding our time with our own little side stories!
But we're not gonna get sidetracked.
No siree bob

Thats the story I am going with.

from the "Where are they now" file... :)

Yeah, I've been out of touch a bit for the last few years...changed firms, work level trippled and have had NO time for my love, paper modeling.
I am working towards getting back on track for I always found modeling relieved the stress; and I have a number of project incomplete that I really want to finish. I am very hopeful I can get back into it and will certainly post some of what I am doing as soon as I can.

As to Olympia, this is still a project near and dear to my heart, and one that truly needs to be represented by a nice paper model. I am not talented enough to create a kit but I still want to try my hand as creating a model of her when I can clear the decks with my other projects...that and a model of a Constellation Class merchant ship I sailed on, my first ship, named the S.S. MORMACLYNX...she has such beautiful lines that I am hell bent to attempt to create her at some point.

Keep modeling, guys and gals, and hope to be back in the mix of things shortly!
Cheers!
Jim
