Help! Yacht design!
I may have posted on a thread that might not have been the most adequate for what I was asking. Sorry! Well it was this:
Hello, I am new here and to paper modeling. I am an industrial design student and at this moment in need of help. I have this Yacht design(modeled in rhino 3d) and I need to make a paper model of it for Tuesday. No instructions needed and no details, I just need to see if someone can make some ready to print/cut papers of the yacht model for me. I can pay for your work but of course message me how much do you ask. I am sorry i don't know if I'm asking too much, the design is very simple, I just don't know how to cut paper so it has the curvature of the hull of my design. I'm sorry if what I asked is just impossible, I just can't seem to figure out the cuts for this. All I need is the Hull, wooden deck, the center cabin or structure and the feature that holds the transparent photovoltaic panels. Size: US paper (it's small) Here is the design: |

Striking vessel; good luck with getting it kitted.

Tuesday might be a push... But if you are that new to paper modelling, let me start by telling you that you need a surface to have zero Gaussian curvature for it to be unfoldable in Rhino, and after that you'll be all set.

Jmac20, instead of asking people to get it done for you by Tuesday, you already got Rhino, you know you can unfold your model with "unroll" and/or "squash".

Actually I'm wondering if "helping" in this case is even appropriate. I am of course assuming that this model is a design course requirement. If that's true then learning the unfolding and model building techniques would be part of the course objectives.Any shortcut that circumvents the learning process would be a dis-service.
I may be mis-reading this whole thing, and anyway it's only my two cents. That being said I'm quite interested to see how this thing will turn out. Curt |

The paper model is no course requirement, I actually do a lot of work on paper, sculptures/art/etc. but I figured for my design class why not make a model in paper since I like to cut and build... I noticed I have no clue how to begin when talking about techniques for a specific curve and line (in this case my distinctive hull and bow) hence I need help from experts that do know hw to achieve those cuts and lines in a paper model.
I don't even know what an unroll is! At least if someone can draw on paper a line of cut that will make me achieve the hull curvature and lines like in my design, something please! I love working with this but I need help on this one. |

OMG! ... I had no idea of the unroll command... I guess I can work with this!
I am so sorry for my naive nature I have never taken the Rhino class (self taught) so I don't know all the commands... For your troubles if I manage to pull this off I swill post the pictures on here for all those who might be interested and to show my homage to all you since I have probably downloaded a couple of paper models from some of you and had fun building them. |

Your model looks like unroll will work. If you got parts that don't unroll, try rebuild the surface again. If that still don't unroll for you, you still got "squish" command.

Thank you! I also needed the squish command just now, this commands will come in handy for future designs as well! Learn something new everyday (:

Sorry that I was no help in this. I used to know some AutoCad but it's been decades since then. I should get into some of the newer software but I just can't seem to get motivated. The one and only model design that I have done was a scratch-build and then pull the skins off exercise.
That being said we would love to see pictures when you get her built. Curt |
