VW Karmann Ghia
Would anybody like to have a crack at a reasonable deatailed Ghia at least 1/33 scale preferably 1/24? I searched high and low and the only thing I could find was a very poor paper model of it. Its one of my favourite cars (A Duesy would probably be my first or a Cadilac Sixteen.) and would love to make a model someday of it.
I'm holding my breath on Daves comments on this car. Cheers, John. |

Hey Michael,
That's great but the the Cadillac Sixteen that I had in mind is from 1932. Here is a link for this BEAUTIFUL artwork on wheels! 1932 Cadillac Sixteen All Weather Phaeton. John. |

The vehicle you indicate is the direct ancestor of one I have seen in person, in NZ, once owned by Marlene Deitrich.
Check out "Southward's Car Museum" in Paraparaumu, New Zealand to see what the vehicle evolved-into. Kind and Respectful Regards, Uyraell.

No problem, I guess I take it that there is not enough interest in the Ghia for someone to design one?

If you are wondering if I will design a paper model Karmann Ghia?...probably not, sorry. I drove my first Karmann Ghia in 1978. And learned a lot about them at that time. I was apprenticing at a shop run by an Austrian guy, and with another German who used to be an important mechanic with Volks in Germany in the 60s. I owned a '62 Beetle at that time (customized, Dune Buggy) and I had a great interest in VWs. The Karmann was designed as a woman's sports car, so it wasn't that well received by North American sports car guys. It was of course the first automatic-standard car. The "semi-automatic" was annoying in my opinion but that was mostly because of my driving style. I like to hang on to the shifter while driving. Which you can't do in this car. For those who don't know...the semi-auto car has no clutch pedal ...but it is a standard with a floor mounted gearshift. In the gearshift knob is a contact switch, so when you grab it to change gears the clutch will electrically disengage. It was (no lie) designed for women ...who of course, only drove in high heels ...so they didn't have to deal with a clutch pedal. Its basically a Beetle underneath, so you can't fault it for that. In my opinion, the beetle is probably the greatest car ever made. Because it was affordable, economical, more stylish than a box, fun to drive, very dependable... but since I was never a huge fan of most little open top "sports cars", I would never personally own a Karmann Ghia. I'd rather have a Beetle ...or a Beetle based kit car ...or a Porsche 356 (now thats the sweetest car ever designed!)

I didn't really have any hopes of you designing a one but rather your typical sharp witted humor.
I know you have more models than time and won't change priorities unless the demand supports it. But I won't mind if you proved me wrong. I have a close older friend that a 356 and had only very good things to say about it, especially the heater. If you have enough interest I would be thrilled to have this done by your artistic hand, I did buy your Edmonton Special Mustang and have nothing but good things to say about the artwork on it! It's my next model I will build when I get a chance. Likewise I would be very happy with any sports car of your choice. John. |

Loving the 356, and that style of Porsche in general, as I do...
I would love to do a small paper model of it. But its all curves! Too many curves for me, and too many (I think) for a simplified paper model. If it was flatter sides like a Beetle, it could work, but then it would not be the same sexy car. "Volkswagen...don't worry, it comes with a spare motor in the trunk." Slogan aimed at the American market.
