Thames Barge 1820

Dear Forum Folks:
As normal you find something neat when for something else did not find what I was looking for but I found this drawing of a 1820's Thames Barge an early version they morphed into a longer sleeker boat in later years, however this just says make me a a model. I fondly hope that someone will also like it and make up the patterns for a model.
Please,
Miles
PS: Send me a PM if you would like the full 1.2K Jpeg of the page

Interesting. Never seen the early version.

Strange and chunky - just like a kids toy!

Dear Sir Gary:
That is just so amazing, to me it should have a load of coal and be dirty and stained sails, sweeps (oars) on the deck. A real work horse of the great Thames river. On ships and boats I have a mental fight over a model of freshly launched and the working rig. I hope you like this boat as well do you want me to send the better Jpeg?
Thanks,
Miles

Admittedly they were the later longer slimmer type, but I can still remember these parading past the steam tugs and lighters on the Battersea coal run.

Both went up river to Battersea Power Station full of coal and came back down full of Corporation rubbish destined for the Ockingdon land fills.

With a good breeze the red sails outpaced the steam tugs easily, but a tug with six lighters could deliver soooo much more coal. So another way of life was slowly elbowed aside.

Dunno if they still do, but back in the '90s there were a few Thames Barges regularly sailing the route ... but with a load of tourists instead of coal.

Well John, if the hulls were all boxy like the pics, I bet a few of the tourists were green!
