In Viet Nam in 66, we were supported by an anti-aircraft battalion of mixed M35 truck mounted quad 50s and tracked twin 40mm M42 Dusters. I don't remember them shooting down too many NVA aircraft <g>, but they sure could bring smoke on perimeter and convoy defense.

We had one 50 cal on each guntruck. We were told it was against the Geneva Conference law of war to use them on human combat. To the best of my knowledge we didn't...........

Mole. So far as I know, the story about non-use of heavy machine guns against human targets is not true. I can check with the Law of Land Warfare experts here at the U.S. Army War College, but this Stars & Stripes article seems to be on target: Can you use the .50-caliber on human targets? - The Rumor Doctor - Stripes
Quad fifties and twin 40s were widely used in Korea and Vietnam in the ground support role. Thanks for starting an interesting thread. I sure hope some guntruck paper models come out of this. Don |

Thanks for the info on the use of the 50 cal in combat. Anybody who has been in combat knows you use anything, and everything you have handy.
I hope somebody will take up the challenge to do them also. They are not colorful, and later on the gun crews did start painting the tucks name in color, but They are just unique. All morning tried to start scan my books, but to do so I would have to take them apart and I don't want to do that. I would lend them out to a designer if needed, or send pictures for items needed for design. Keeping my fingers crossed. Enclose a photo of a firebase we supplied. |

I apologize if this post has drifted off topic.
I did a quick search and did not find a paper model of a Vietnam gun truck. AFV has produced a pl@st!c model of one. A year or so ago, our friend Mauther posted a link to a paper model of a European gun truck, but it is not exactly what is being looked for here. PAPERMAU: Tatra SOT Military Truck Paper Model In 1/43 Scale - by Rawen There are paper models of gun trucks used in Iraq paperhobby: M915 "Gun Truck" 1:35 paperhobby: Oshkosh HEMTT A2 M977 Mobility tactical cargo truck 1:35 (complete) |

John - I can't speak for The Mole, who began this thread, but in my opinion your info is directly on topic and very useful. The Papermau vehicle is not a Vietnam-era guntruck, but is most certainly is a guntruck. Iraq guntrucks are of interest since they are both independent inventions and descendants of the Vietnam-era guntrucks.
I defer to Mole on this, but myself, I welcome any info on the general subject of guntrucks, and especially on the matter of Vietnam guntrucks, with which Mole has very personal experience. Don |
