Porsche 924 Carrera GT
Hi,
I'm a big fan of what seems to be a very unpopular Porsche. The 924 Carrera GT. Anyone willing to design such a model? If you are, please let me know what you would need from me to make it happen. Thanks, Jan. |

Whole load of paper Porsches here, but although the name crops up, I'm pretty sure none of the models are of a 924. I gather that, as you say, the 924 is not very popular among Porsche fans.

I know I have seen one, but I can't figure out where it was. Maybe I'll find it later. It was red. Not that I've driven that many Porsches, but I really enjoyed the 928, except in the winter. It was almost as bad on snow and ice as my Impala SS

One of our members, Mike Bauer, just bought one!
At least I think it was a 924. I always liked the 924, even if it was underpowered for a Porsche. Its not a 911, but at least its not a 914!! And the 928 I never could adjust too. I tried to like it, but theres something off about it. And a four seat (944) Porsche is just silly. If I could, I'd own a 356...so that tells you where my Porsche interest lies. No, I don't think there is a 924 model. Somebody...get on that.

Yes, the yellow looks like a standard 924. The red and blue are 944. Mike |

Actually the car I purchased is a 1990 944 S2 Cabriolet. The 924 was the base model for the 944. It was sold first. Basically a water cooled front engine with the transaxle in the rear. Gave it close to a 50/50 weight distribution. At first the 924 used an Audi engine. In the 1980's Porsche upgraded the 924 with an actual Porsche designed engine, better suspension upgrades, flared the fenders to install a wider stance and bigger tires-this new model is called 944. They basically used half of a 928's 8-clyinders, making a 4-cylinder in-line engine. They had to use a couple of balance shafts to offset the vibration from using fairly large pistons. The 944 engine block was also made completely from aluminum. Sleeves and everything, they heated treated it several times to gain hardness. This made it very light and powerful. The 924 Carrera GT used some of the upgraded parts of the 944, turning the 924 GT into a very fast 924. Anytime Porsche uses the word Carrera, you can bet it is way faster than the normal version. Think of them as a road legal race car. The GT stands for Grand Touring, while RS stands for Race Series. On my 944 S2, the S2 stands for big changes to the basic 2.5Liter engine. Mine has 3.0L and 8-more valves than the standard 2.5L engine, uses dual overhead cams and produces 208 HP. Good for 162mph on a normally aspirated 4-cylinder engine in 1990. On a race track like Watkins Glen, a 944 S2 (not convertible) can keep pace and even win over higher HP Porsche Boxsters (6-cylinders) because of the 50/50 weight balance. Meaning they don't slow down as much for corners, yes, the Boxster can leave it behind on the straights-better acceleration and top end, but it has no chance in the corners. Mike |

Yellow model says 968?
Looks like 928 round headlamps to me? 924 has flipups, correct?

Hi folks.
If I were to offer to pay for the design, would that interest any of the designers? I also plan on buying one, just a regular 924, in the next five years or so and would really like to have a paper model to go with the real thing. Please let me know.... Jan. Not a car designer, but if you're interested here is a link to a 924 thread at a Porsche forum: 924, 924S and 931 Forum - Rennlist Discussion Forums On the home page there is a for sale thread as well. Another thread combines all of the front engine models, but it covers mostly 944 stuff. Good luck with your planned purchase! They are fun to drive! Yes, Dave; there are a couple of threads started by me in the 944 forum-having fuel supply issues and the car is parked in the garage while the weather is incredibly nice here in Southcentral Alaska....
