A couple of quirks I remember about the N3N that I trained in: 1. The altimeter never gave a true reading, but it didn't matter because we were never allowed to fly very high over the Chesapeake Bay and on landing you were not watching the gauges, you were watching the water surface! 2. If you were trying to (for instance) fly NE, the compass would indicate that you were flying somewhere between ENE, NE and NNE! The FAA grounded the whole fleet the year after I graduated (that's why the Navy sold them all). Sorry, I'll shut up now.

N3n-3 navy basic floatplane trainer

Is this what you are thinking of? At the Willow Run MI airshow last week. Owner is Bill Hirzel, Northwood OH. On wheels, but has all the floats.

That is the Lady! They have removed the center float and dolly (it is peeking out from behind the aircraft tail fin). They probably did this to lower the craft closer to eye level. With the center float in place, it is quite tall for a small plane.

Looking at it more closely, I see that it has forward landing gear as well as the tail wheel. I thought that it was on some sort of cradle. The tail wheel was not installed either on our craft. Maybe the owner really has an PT-17 and ships the floats to fly-ins to show the flying boat configuration. I never heard of a convertible model. But then, I haven't heard of a lot of things.

Photos and specs

Murphy,

Here is the first set of Navy Official Photos taken in Dec of 1958. Now that I have given credit to the Navy, I can legally publish them.

Murphy,

Here are the remaining photos and the specification sheet. I copied the spec sheet at 300dpi. If it doesn't appear readable when you enlarge it, let me know and I will copy it at 600 and see if that helps.
