Dear John:
The world military sure came up with some odd stuff. To my eye it must have been a tippy boat looks to 1/2 the width of a modern airboat . Would make a nice paper model in 1/32 scale Thanks for finding it, Miles

Interesting. Kind of a swamp-buggy mated with a soap-box derby racer. Right up there with the PT boats that launched their fish 'backwards.' However, in many respects it does make sense to be running away from the big boy you are throwing rocks at.

I stumbled across the cigarette card, wondered if the subject was "real" and managed to hunt down two more pictures.
Were the air-boats were "official" and made from kits shipped out from England, or were they were designed and put together on the spot from engines scrounged from a plane that was beyond repair, perhaps a Vimy or Handley Page, both of which had a pair of engines? The natives must have had heart attacks the first time one of the air boats passed up a dhow.

I just found another picture of a pair of these air boats on the French National photo archive site.
There were at least 3 named air boats, and the bow ID numbers suggest there were at least 7 of them, so they must have been officially issued and not local one off builds. http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv...51c/f1.highres This means there must be even more photos and plans out there, the next place to look would be the IWM web site.

The last picture of my first post of this thread, I have no information about the subject of the picture: could it be a WW1 German air boat in German East Africa? The blurred medal worn by the officer in the stern might be an Iron Cross, and one of the crew is wearing jack boots. I don't know enough about colonial uniforms to be able to identify were they come from, if they are indeed German or if they are British.
Any suggestions?
