Yes, they were/are stylized representations of the real prototype, but toys nonetheless.

Anyone who builds any of the versions available, can enhance their version as much as they like, just like Jerry and WSL have done with their copies, because they probably consider their kits not toys but models.
I wouldn't consider them exactly as toys but definitively, they were not aimed to the modelers market. That's for sure. However, several people confuse models with toys just because models are small. And as you say, any skilled modeler can convert these models into museum quality pieces.

I really wouldn't consider them toys, I mean they build a wonderful model. To me it makes a better model than Revell or so.
