There is a closed FaceBook page (if you do FaceBook) called I Want To Customize My Johnny 5 Toy Robot! that is one of the most amazing sources of information about Johnny 5.
Their gallery includes an extensive photo shoot of one of the actual Johnny 5 robots fully dis-assembled (NO DIS-ASSEMBLE STEPHANIE) with rulers for accurate measurements. There are also CAD files of the Original Johnny 5, the toy robots from Short Circuit 2 and a ROBOT V toy that was produced in Hong Kong that resembles Johnny 5. Many people in this group customize and build various Johnny 5 models and are often happy to share. But there have been a few bad apples who have come into this group, asked for and got lots of help, only to then try to extort and profit from the help they've received. So there can be a little distrust when someone comes in looking for help straight away. But if you explain your plans, and look around I'm sure you can find loads of good genuine source material to help you get started. |

I would love to see a Johnny 5 paper model so much - and make it, of course.

The Robot V Toy is a good likeness to J5 but the track section is too small, the kit from Hong Kong is very expensive. The best example I have seen is made by Cy Toys in Japan its approx 6" tall and is a very accurate replica of J5 as he appeared in the first film complete with Laser which is the version I would like to make a model of but their price is $400 plus.
I have the incomplete cad files from Input Inc of the full size J5 but what i need is a complete side, and front view to work from which i would use alongside the photos i have of the CY toy. Sincerely Tom |

This is the first I'm hearing of Cy Toy and Google isn't helping me much?
Not that I intend to spend >$400 for a 6" figure. However, I do hope to 3D Print a Johnny 5 at some point. I'm thinking somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 scale as a good compromise for maximum automation and articulation. In the mean time, I'll keep an eye on your progress as I'd love a papercraft Johnny 5 as well. I tried the Nova Project one, but I'm not a huge fan of cubie papercraft. |
