Yup, it was amazing technology at the time and still looks pretty viable. Check out the whole Luft 46 web site. Some very cool designs and great artwork.

I'd say less insane that our first astronauts strapped to the top of things originally classified as artillery projectiles.

Mag-Lev launching rail with an auxiliary linear accelerator and it really becomes even more viable now than then.

This looks a lot more curvatious that other depictions I've seen. I could have sworn that there was a kit out there too

Saw a neat bit about this bird on the History Channel show about Weird Weapons of the Axis. They seem to show it every couple of months. Being a history and WWII nerd, that's not a problem for me.

shrike - When they designed this odd bird they had no idea that a craft needed heat-shielding during re-entry (which they thankfully got right on the Mercury, etc. missions).

A lot more insane than the first astronauts as this was a one way trip. It seems highly unlikely that after bombing NYC that the US would build them a launcher so they could get back to Germany. This vessel was intended to be suborbital, skipping across the atmosphere in the direction of it's target. If sucessful the pilot(s) would have been the first astronauts.

I have seen plastic models at 1/72 scale the aircraft, booster, and launcher is about three feet long.

B-Manic - Actually, the pilot was intended to keep on flying all the way to the Japanese-held Pacific and land there. Which, of course, never would've happened because it didn't have the requisite heat-shielding...
