Jay I thought of using the gpm brass barrels that they make for the JSC line. I was going to take the barrels from the zuiho set they have but it is oddly self defeating as I'm trying to beta build my own ship design. I still may do it on some of the guns and I already conceded to the paper rails. Heck it may do good as a plug for the aftermarket accessaries. I do have some 1/350 stuff somewhere that I could use also. Well more later...

Some last fiddly bits before retireing...
I fininished up the foredeck and rails and bits etc. The rails are drafmodel in 1/400 scale I got them from JSC.pl site. Thefwd small davit is made from a thin piece of plastic. I couldn't find a wire bit in the size I wanted! More tomorrow...

Twin long lancers

Its been longer than a few days but sometimes life gets in the way! I managed to start on the next deck up, but breaking with my current stategy of building from bow to stern I decided to build up the twin tubes. The parts are pretty straight forward a couple of tightrolled tubes, the mount and then the shield. I made very thin strips that can be added to the tubes for more detail but the printed on effect is pretty good as is. The training wheel and support are very small so havea goodset od tweezers. Mysuggestion is to builtup the tubes 1st and if you glue the detail strips on then attach the tubes to the base 1st. Then glue the shield over the tubes or you'll never thread the tubes thru. I f you don't use the strips then any order you want will work....

Putting some light on the subject...

Thye Kashima hasn't been abandoned, just delayed. I started building/testing the 2 large search light towers and lights. They are pretty straightforward cylinders with a top. I put on the rails from draf model. The lights are built up like a drum with 2 smaller discs to give them a little more depth. The base is simplified bent strip the a disc as the bottom base...

C Deck

The next big part is the 2nd deck up from themain. I don't rememberwhat convention calls these decks so I named the main deck A deck, the next upper B and so forth. C deck hasa neat armoured front rail which has the running lights on the sides. The front of the deck will have a cool little rangefinder, seen in a later pic, 2 Yamaguchi saluting cannons, 2 pylorus thingys and various binoculars. Here are a few pics of C deck in progress. At this point most of the little details are dry fitted...
The lastpic shows the smoke stack house being assembled and teh vent that goes just aft...

Hi CMDRTED,

Coming right along with your project there. I have enough problems with 1/200 scale stuff, so I can appreciate all the fun you are having with half sized pieces parts. I keep a few extra brass/aluminum barrel sets around so that I can rob one or two if I need to make up something for one that I don't have the actual designed parts for. I also have a number of 25mm barrels that I got as a bonus gift for an order that have come in right handy.

Keep up the good work, I will be watching with anticipation as you work your way through this one.

The project thus far...

Finished up some more details and dry fitting going on, the rectangle aft is a radio room and will have a tripod tower with the ubiquitous ball antenae, when built. the 2 trapazoids are some canvas covered somethings, probably flag lockers or something. The boat racks will support 2 rowing cutters, somehow each navy seems to have rowing the cadets as a staple excercise. There is a shot with a forward gun director which came out ok. I was going to make it one square piece but looking at some detailed pics of a plastic model it is sorta how this came out, more much later as work calls....

Cutters pt one...

The 1st try at ships boats are the small rowing cutters. These were designed as simple flat details but I did include an option to cut out the thwarts and have a planked lower deck. I was in a hurry so the flat details will have to stand for now. I'm designing a canvas set of covers so excuse the flat details for now...

flyswatters, er 25mm and cutters mk2

I built up the twin 25mm guns, they are only a few simple pieces but with a little wire gunsight and white glue flares at the ends of .4 mm wire or plastic barrels they came out pretty nifty.
Also after some critical review I redid the cutters late last pm into am and came out with cutters mk 2. I revised the inner deck so it is a little easier cutting out the reliefs and highlited some of the plank details. The cutter in the backround is an old mk1 with a trial canvas cover...
