IJN Hosho 1/400 scale
Well the next project is ready for testing. It is a waterline kit I designed of the worlds first built as designed aircraft carrier. The HMS Eagle I think was designed and started first but labour disputes and a sluggish post WW1 economy stalled the UK. This little ship had alot of English influence, the landing/trap system and some other aircraft handling techniques and were put to use and improved by the Japanese. This kit is the Hosho as designed and finished with a small island and crane on the flight deck in 1922. The parts are spread across 6 sheets 3 on regular type bond paper the other 3 on card. I used the ships boats from the Kashima, but due to page size differances they had to be on a separate sheet. I also wasn't happy with the first run Mitsubishi 1MF fighters and rescanned a hand drawn plan then redrew the parts in a more detailed format. They also are on a separate sheet....

Here are the main structual parts laminated to .5mm card stock and ready for assembly. It is a standard frames and bulkhead hull structure with printed on parts. Here is the first efforts now drying and waiting for hull skinning...

Wow! You are really on track to design and build all the less known Japanese ships.

Interesting project. Hope you don't mind but I've included a photo so we can see were you are going.

This is a magnificent project, Ted. The design is brilliant and the work so far is of your usual over-the-top standard. I think you have zeroed in on a perfect project. A lesser-known, but historically very important ship with a deck load of very attractive aircraft.
The finished model would look good alongside a model of Langley with a deck load of - what - TS-1s and VE-7s? Anyway, I have enjoyed your prelimary postings and am getting great pleasure out of seeing this ship take shape. Don |

Wonderful idea and nice work, Ted. I'm really glad to see you cluttering up your life with cardstock and tools!

I was hoping for a model of this some day... and here it came. Any chance of a release so I could get my hands on it? Or would it be pictures-only? I'll be watching closely

Lex, it'll be released as soon as I can come up with a viable build and instructions so some other soul can put it together. The Kashima came out pretty good but the hold up for release is instructions. I was trying to do it 2d/cad but that was making me crazy. I'll break out my old drafting tools and inks and hand draw instructions. I was projecting this month for Kashima and soon after for Hosho. I built in a few "options" like separate hatches and porthole backings. For the Hosho I plan on using sometype of line across the dots on the flightdeck for arrestor cables. I originally had them drawn on but they looked alittle odd when printed. I'm having the ist teething problems with the after hull skins, the upper deck is a little too tall and I built in a little extra horizontally to be trimmed after installing. I'm not 100% sure that's the way to go but it seems to work on dry fitting.
