Actually, the rigging was to emphasize the way the stress was put on the float. I did not mean to endorse rigging, I should have expressed that. The box structure would not be enough. The leading and trailing edge pieces I refer to, which would be sandwiched between the leading and trailing vertical formers, would deal with the twisting that could occur from the float to the fuselage, as well as the fore and aft tipping moments. The box structure by itself would not be enough. Unless, there were copious use of multi directional carbon fiber with structural foam. The piece would still have to be attached, so the carbon fiber would have to be wove around appropriate mounts, and of course, the reaction between carbon fiber and aluminum, when water comes into play, would mean the area would have to be completely waterproof, even from moisture.
