Renault 40CV

I just start another project for fun : the Renault 40 CV, 1925

Based on a commercial model, this model (2 tonnes, 9000 cm3 for the motor and 190 Km/h : a monster) was used for records.

Usually, I use Illustrator for my models, but this time I will try to use Sketchup the most than I can. So, I have to learn this software at the same time.

Is sketchup going to get you where you need to be? In the pics the back end of the roof is very round, and in your 3d model it is pointed. Or it could be you were going for a different look than the pictures.

A wonderful project, Pat. I had never heard of this vehicle. I see thats it retains that very distinctive early Renault hood (bonnet/engine cover).

Thanks to all for your encouragements.

Miles : no scale at this moment. After Sketchup, I will redraw the lines in Illustrator (for me Sketchup is only a "simple" way to draw faces that I could'nt draw easily in Illustrator, especialy without calculation). So, any scale can be choose.

Vermin : you are right the roof is round, more rounded that I have done. I will try to correct that, but I don't know if I will be able to do it. I'm a very beginer with Sketchup.

Don : I discovered this car very recently. And I was very impressed by its design. It would be difficult to drive. Very heavy (2 tonnes) and very fast, with, probably, not very efficient brakes...

Slight modifications on the roof.

This Renault 40CV reminds me of an enclosed version of the early Itala 4litre racer.
The brakes on this Renault would be equivalent, which is to say: "push foot and pedal through floorboards and pray Almighty God the beast stops in sufficient time to keep driver alive". Most braking systems of that era were either friction block or very crude expanding band. Neither of which would these days inspire confidence, or survivability.

I admire your skill in producing this fine example of a rare vehicle Pat_Craft my friend, and look forward to your success with it.

Genial and Respectful Regards, Uyraell.

What a great project! I'll be watching with interest. Was this a land speed record car, or some other type of racer? I've always had an interest in LSR racers, but there are practically none in paper.

Thanks for your encouragements Uyraell !
Don : this car come from a commercial luxury car. And it is specialy design for speed records in 1926.

Next step. I have imported the different parts of the car from Sketchup to Illustrator. I had some tabs, design some other parts and I test how it goes. Every parts fit pretty well and I am sufficiently satisfied to go on.

I really love this car with its terrific design.
Actualy it is big : 18 cm
