Little Boy

I have recently had some personal problems, so I had to suspend my project of C-5 Galaxy. But I started reading a book I bought in New York ("Shockwave - Countdown to Hiroshima") about the three weeks that passed between the Trinity test and the bombing of Hiroshima. The reading has led me to investigate the subject and to read another book ("The Making of the Atomic Bomb"), this translated into Italian, which covers the entire history of the invention of the atomic bomb, from the discoveries of the early '900 up to Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

These readings have awakened my interest in the technological adventure that changed the course of history and that has so heavily influenced the lives of my generation during the Cold War years. So I started to collect some documentation to make a paper model of Little Boy, even though the subject and the pain that has caused, have filled me with doubts and hesitations. But eventually prevailed will to try to build the model, with the aim also to find a way to use Inkscape, a vector graphics software, that I could use with the design of Galaxy.

I started with some pictures and drawings that I found online: the original device, but also replicas, models and original casings.

Sketchup

The project has taken shape in Sketchup

And I did some test to check that the model was similar to the real

Prototyping

So the cycle of prototyping has started, going from design to test built to return to the drawing that contains corrections and additions, which were identified while building.

Here the first version of the cylindrical body of the bomb.

The terminal cone added with barometric sensors and some bolts

Then the nose

The second version

The second version of the body with more details and the lift lug

To make the bolts on the surface of the bomb, I punched small circles of double thick paper, with a diameter of 0.75 mm

Then I added some more particular, like the red arming plugs on the top, punching of them with a rod of 1,5 mm of diameter. You can see also an enhanced version of the cone and terminal cylinder

Two solutions for the tail tested. The green is the chosen one, and this time I started to colorize the parts using Inkscape

The “drilled” fins

… and the rear box

The prototype of the tail is completed, but the rear plate in the final version will have more details that I discovered after I designed it.

Below You can see the first attempt to reproduce the Yagi antennas

At this point I can consider completed the prototyping phase for the bomb

The dolly

This is the first version of the dolly. I’m not very satisfied, and I think I have to redraw, … or not (!?)

That’s all folk, for now ….

Best, Nando

Wow, this is definitely one of those models where you'd never guess it was made of paper! I've been looking for a good scale model of Little Boy for quite some time now; can't wait to see the finished product!
