I can't remember seeing the two bombs together, side-by-side. It's amazing to me that they fit in the bomb bay of a B-29 bomber!

each of the bomb bays were modified to fit these bombs, definitely a non standard load out

The bombs themselves were designed to fit inside the existing B-29 fuselage, and it was the bomb mounting mechanisms that were modified.
Both Little Boy and Fat Man are the same length overall. It's just amazing that they were able to do so!

I've been inside Enola Gay, and somewhere I have photos of the interior bomb bay, and the bomb mount was a decidedly Rube Goldberg looking affair. The one inside Bock's Car is even more "curiouser" looking. When I was stationed at Wright Patt, my best friend was the Director of Operations at the museum. I had unlimited access to all of the airplanes and took full advantage of it! It was a ball.

I've been inside the wing of a B-36 looking at the engine spaces. Unfortunately, I never photographed that!

I envy you Charles (): inside Enola Gay, Bock's car and B-36! and no pictures!! aaahgggg ....

BTW. I found this picture of the three subjects and the Man was very Fat.

Fat Man (F31) at 1/24-5341393878_2e9ee44e5d_o.jpg

Here were I am. A test of the various details on the body: fuzes, joints (that connect the two halfs of the body each other, and the tail), Yagi antennas, just for verify that the fit is correct .

The model is taking shape day by day, and is a great satisfaction when everything seems to spin smoothly. But around the corner there is still a nigthmare. I have yet to reproduce the paint sprayed on the joints to seal the bomb. All with Inkscape and I don't know how.

Best, Nando

They redesigned the displays long after I left Wright Pat Air Force base and put all the atomic bomb artifacts in one area. I wonder why they painted Fat Man in that curious paint scheme only to drop it on Nagasaki.

I'm planning on a trip back to the Museum at the end of summer. IF I actually make the trip, I'll make sure to get some photos of the bomb bay of Bock's Car.

BTW, like the Enola Gay, that is the REAL Bock's Car and not just some random B-29 they painted to represent the atomic bomber. With some detailed restoration of the engines, etc., that plane could be made to fly. Like most of the museum's aircraft, Bock's Car flew to the museum decades ago!

About the paint scheme of the Fat Man, I found that at Tinian there was a number of bomb casings. They were used, "only" filled with high explosive, by the 509th for practice, dropping them on Japanese cities. Sixteen missions of this kind were accomplished before dropping the operational ones. This "dummy" bombs were bright orange and were called "pumpkins", I don't know if for the color or for the shape. I suppose that for the F31 one of this cases was used, and that could justify the color scheme.

Here some more details, with a dummy to compare bombs and the people.

Here some picture of the real one with people near it.

Here loading a "pumpink" into the B29 bomb bay for a practice mission.

Best, Nando

It sure looks to me as if the guy is applying some sort of a sealant to the seams in one picture.

Is there something that attaches to the tabs on the back of the fins?

Nando, your model is just too cool!
