Bugatti model 100
Over on the site hushkit.wordpress the mst recent entry is about the Bugatti Model 100 race plane from France. Wow what an advanced design.
"The Bugatti Model 100 is a very sexy plane. Designed to compete in the 1939 Deutsch de la Meurthe Cup Race, it had great aspirations to break world records but like a lot of awesome things, it got waylaid by a fascist Germany and it never made its glorious debut" Thanks for looking Mike |

Wasn't aware that the firm did airplanes, but given the advanced features of its cars, the advanced design of this plane is not a surprise. Looks like two V-8 or V-12 engines mounted at slight angles in the fuselage, so that the drive shaft of the aft engine goes right by the side of the forward engine -- the engines driving contrarotating propellors. Not clear to me where the cockpit is, however.

It used 2 Type 50 engines geared together. Here's a link to info on the engine. History of Bugatti: Type 50 Engine
There is a real high dollar resin kit of the plane. Would be nice to see one of the designers here jump into doing one. |

After reading a bit I found out that its restoration had been started by Dr. Peter Williamson, who owned a bunch of Bugatti's including the blue Atlantic that won Pebble Beach several years ago. Here's a link to an article (unfortunately an obit) about him. the Bugatti revue, 13-3, Requiem for a Collector
