Dh 4m

This is my present project, to be a mailplane series for fg, although there aren't enough mailplanes yet for a separate catagory, it is a fun goal. Yes Shrike I'm trying to do the existing specimen, I think it's a beauty.

Here's a rear quarter view of the model. Flying surfaces still hand done, except the struts on this first build attempt.

This set me to thinking what airplanes were designed chiefly for the carriage of mail.
Off the top of my head there's this one, although converted from a light bomber
Pitcairn Mailwing
Ju-60 - one of the few civilian catapult launched aircraft
He-70 -again bomber tie in - small dense packages at high speed
Standard M1
Ryan M

What else?

Thanks guys, yeah, Douglas M2, and carrier pigeon, swallow biplane, Stearman speedmail, probably the actual first being the Ford trimotor, although was not given credit for it as it carried mostly items and personel for Ford initially. Here in the Northwest a small Curtis flying boat was a reliable mail carrier for years. I have plans for two of these, speedmail( that I've had a ride in)and the Standard you mentioned. The Douglas has been modeled already, but many of these have not.

Cool plane Rob. Boeing was on a roll around then, some with those interesting crossing undercarriage struts. Peashooter and earlier fighter, the success of the model 40, probably culminating with the B-17. The late 20's to mid 30's showed so many successful Boeing aircraft. Some of those designs show direct influence of the Monomail I think.

Great DH-4, Glen. I like the "collage" of paper models.

Is there a series of mailplane models in the making?

Thanks Don! There are still a couple more I'd like to do if I can. Will be working on fine tuning the DH4 probably for a bit. I'm waiting also for Lees'
book to arrive on 18-19th century sailing ship rigging, said to be the book to have. The collage is just what the corner of my desk looks like! I was hoping Barry would consider this my first aircraft carrier.

Just kidding there Barry, I don't know if I'll ever have the energy to do a real aircraft carrier!
