Sorry, it has been a couple weeks between updates. Here is the progress on the “shark fin” template. This is the fuselage for a B-17C or D. I am more satisfied with this rear fuselage shape than the one I did for the Y1B-17s several years ago. I’m now working on the “bath tub” belly gun position and should hopefully have a few photos of it by the end of the week. The first “shark fin” I want to do is a Fortress I from the RAF 90th Squadron, serial number AN 525. This was the first of roughly 5,000 Flying Fortresses to fall in combat. Someone asked about “The Swoose”, and yes, it is on my list of B-17s to do. I’d like to do two versions. One as it appeared in combat and the other when it was used as a personnel transport.

Here are a couple of comparison photos with the B-17F fuselage and nose.

And speaking of noses, trying to get the B-17B thru E nose piece into the right shape has been a real challenge. I think I have finally got something workable. Now I have to re-work it for the RAF Fortress I. The 90th Squadron RAF Fortress Is had a modified nose piece with a wider bomb aimers panel.

90th Squadron Fortress I (I wonder what that guy is drilling a hole for)

The standard greenhouse nose as fitted to “Peggy E” which will be first B-17E I plan to do.

John,

The photo that CBG posted "The Swoose" is that the same B-17 that the T.V. actress is named after? (Swoosie Kurtz) I remember reading in the T.V. Guide magazine about how she got the name because her father flew in WWII B-17's and was named after his plane.

Hi Jeff,

You are correct. Swoosie Kurtz is named after the B-17 "The Swoose". Her father, Frank Kurtz, was the pilot. He must have sure liked that airplane. I would hope they would invite her to the unvailing once the restoration is done.

Here are some photos that Swampfox sent me of a test build he did showing the bath tub gun position.

Wings and bomb bay are next.

John,
Your work on this project is just amazing, and it's incredible how you're capturing the lines of this beautiful aircraft. Can't wait to see all the versions when they're done!
