I was actually in the B-17 turboprop test plane that was at the Windsor Locks air museum in Connecticut right after the tornado ripped thru the collection in 1979.
It was then restored to conventional B-17 configuration, named the Liberty Bell, but crashed and burned in 2011. A picture of the plane I was in right after the tornado credit the Hartford Current newspaper. I have my own pics as well Interesting plane, and would be a nice addition to a B-17 collection. Isaac

Here are a couple of color photos after the tornado as well as a nice color in-flight shot with a test engine installed. I always wished when they restored this aircraft that they had kept it in its test bed configuration.

Wow, that brought back some memories. I too was at the Bradley Air Museum less than two weeks after the tornado blew through. I remember sitting in the McDonnels just across the street looking at all the damage, and thinking, it got hit so hard, but Mikey D’s Was fine, Such a shame.
Seeing all those aircraft torn apart and upside down. I never went back after that day. I can’t even dig through my collection of photos to see my own, before and after shots. They were destroyed in hurricane Sandy. |

Since Wee Willie is now done and available I can dedicate all my time to get Memphis Belle finished, hopefully in time for her unveiling in May. Replicating her sloppy, hap hazard camouflage scheme has been an interesting and time consuming challenge. Plus researching the all the varied markings she carried at various times in her career. I’ve decided to represent Memphis Belle as she appeared on her arrival to Washington DC for the start of the war bond tour.

Outstanding work on Wee Willie, John.
I appreciate all your research and attention to detail (not to mention the superb art work) in attempting to replicate accurately this aircraft at a particular place and time. Don |

While Memphis Belle is important, and common, I still eagerly await the engine test bed version.

Sad photos of the tornado damage John.
Any plans to do any of the B-17 assembly ships?
