thanks all. Thomas there was a signature on this website that quoted ''some things are done by trial and error. I'm especially good at error!"
the wood planks were done in layers. 1st the main deck is drawn as a base layer with all the details and structure locations. then it is base colored. prewar gray for the metal and a base wood like color. this I found is the most important step. the base color would be the old fly/gpm etc. equivalent of monochromatic wood. then you make another layer of planking above the base deck. at 1st I tried to do it in scale, a plank @ 6" wide would be 120 across. the pixels are too wide for that so you approximate. I think the 1st count was @ 60 to 70. it looks great on a monitor but when you print it you get too much bleeding of the black lines and a glob of deck colors. the width of the planks needed adjusted so I widened them to give an effect of planking. you combine the layers and then fill the individual planks with colors similar to base but with different hues and shades added. I once thought of using a wood textured back fill but that looked like a blob too.

latest update

It's been awhile since the last post. here is the test build hull mk 3. there are a lot of little tweaks when you design 2d with old software. I don't think I have enough time to learn rhino 3 which sits on the computer. anyhows this is a cleaned up hull and formers with another less pale prewar nav gray. here are the formers and hull building up...

mk 1 superstructure

while waiting for the hull to dry and getting frustrated with having to tweak stuff the superstructure was trial built. either the scales between the programs is becoming less constant or I forgot to take the elephant out before putting the giraffe in the fridge there were small discrepancies in the forming of some of the deck houses. here is a trial pre adjusted of the fwd superstructure less the fiddly bits...

mk 3 hull

the 3rd hull went fairly well, but the scaling gremlins left one or 2 more tweaks to do. here is the hull with the mk 1 superstructure. trial and error, the error seems to be ahead at this point!

This looks very very nice for 1/400. I am pleased you chose this subject. I don't know why there not more USN WW II cruiser kits, and especially 1/200 full hull. Friedman's Cruiser design book gets a lot of use, more so than his others I have. I regularly look at the 8-inch gun cruisers pondering what nice models they would make. Very professional build!

some updates

the project has been ongoing, however a few snags are really slowing the project down. sizing and color issues abound but it does go forward slowly here are a few update pics... number one is a hull shot of the parts so far.

Big guns

the turrets are always fun to develop. The Wichita had 9 8" guns in turrets. The design and build are straight forward, the small details are being tested. The 2nd turret has intake vents aft, the finished turrets will have neutrality red stripes and a blue dot...
