Waterpoort

A "waterpoort" is the dutch term for a gate over (or in?) a watercourse. The model I present to you is freelanced and hopefully will be part of a small village. I'm thinking about a city wall already and reserved some space to the right side to attach it to the gatehouse. On the left a "normal" city gate will give entrance for the road.

The village will feature structures like a "Waag" (weigh house), "Visbanken" (fish auction), a town square and so on. Due to limited space in my house, I will make it modular.

At the moment, I found a few errors in my design, as soon as these are ironed out, I will (try to) upload the design.

Hello Christiaan,

Good to see another Dutch designer an his efforts here.
Looking at your profile: the modell is in N-schale?
You started a promising project and I will follow it!

Thank you for the nice replies.

As to the scale: I planned it in 1:100, but places next to another model, it appeared to be to small. So I changed the window size to be more fitting with 1:160 (as Ponytail more or less suggested).

I tried to upload the revised model. Smaller windows and a revised seam in the "main building". I did not get error messages, so I think it went alright.

Going with N-scale also may settle the theme of this project: I have a "Wadloper" model by Fleischmann, so it likely is going to be some Frisian or Groningen based small city. So for now, back to the drawingoard and finish the base of this gate.

a piece of city wall is ready as well and the base, demonstrating that is is indeed a "waterpoort" as well.

For defense, a few loopholes both in the gate and wall.

That's about it for this weekend.

Very nice work, Christiaan. This is an interesting project...your model looks as if it would be usable in the N-gauge model railroad layout I've been developing. I've become very interested in the English canal system and it's narrowboats, and want an urban area that includes an 'old town' section...this Water gate would nicely tie together those themes.

Well, I underestimated the difficulties of designing a freelance building. Or, maybe I overestimated my ability to do so . . . Small error after error creped in, the attached photos may show it a little. The overall idea still is right, but I will redesign some of the structures (roof of the gate). Rearrange them a little (shift it all to the right, as seen from outside) and change the way they are glued to the base (outside and inside "landscape" as two separate parts).

On the good side:
  • the gate is of the right dimension, a N-scale car can pass under it!
  • I refreshed my knowledge of cosine, sine and so on.

Not unimportant to: I now know a few things that does not work, so I can try new solutions.
