Downton Abbey.

I found a 3d model of downton abbey on sketchup that I was able to convert to .3ds for import into AC3D. At this point to make it into a model it has to pretty much be copied block by block into shapes that pepakura can properly digest. Here is the a WIP picture:

here we can see the advantage of redrawing for paper modeling. I made the 4 corner towers using 6 flat sides instead of the dozens that the sketchup/ 3ds version made. this will be crucial for unfolding.

here's some analysis of the details. as an unfolding test, I've reduced the model to just two of the towers, one the original sketchup, the other my 6 sided version. looking at the zoom in there is a lot more detail in the sketchup version at the base and there are separators at each floor, detail I can add without any difficulty but havent as of yet. The real issue is when you look at the third picture, the results of the 3d unfold. you'll see my 6 sided version perfectly laid out as a paper model, but the sketchup version is all but impossible to build (and it has lost its coloring too.)

That looks interesting.

If you want some reference photos of the real thing search for Highclere Castle.

Interesting to see your process. One of my plans after retirement was to learn a design software. It's been a year now, and I still haven't dipped my toe into that pool. There is a very nice model of Downton Abbey available here • Afficher le sujet - DOWNTON ABBEY If you ever hit a design snag, this kit might be helpful to use a reference.

lol! had I known there was a DA already available, I probably wouldn't of started. Well I'm learning a lot by doing in anyway. I finally figured out a good way to do intersecting roofs. Here you can see how well it unfolds as well:

Making intersecting roofs is a roadblock for many people so I congratulate you. Well done!
