Do you have permission to share this?

This is a good explanation. This will help me a lot, because I come across a lot of copied material. They're so common, maybe we should show them (pirates) the picture.

I feel like this doesn't cover the case I'm facing.
I'm working on rescaling the Greelt Peterusma 1:48 Saturn V to 1:72, without eliminating any detail. There is work involved, rather than just printing it at 2/3, because some of the lines become too thin and don't print. Also I'd like to join some of the pieces that are currently separate, so as to minimize seams. My plan was to share the finished product with all existing copyright markings intact. I'm not even sure, yet, if I'll add my own mark, like the "Tampered with by LEGAL 01" that's on it now. I feel like I understand copyright well enough to conclude that what I'm doing is perfectly ok, so long as I'm not charging for it and so long as I provide attribution to the original authors (i.e. what's in the big orange box), but unless I interpret paper model plans as a "stamp, mold, screen, or other commercially available tool" and the act of making it available for free as "allowing use of their designs in products that I sell", I don't see a path to get there. Or am I wrong and the correct path is to the green "Fair Use" box? Or am I really wrong, and shouldn't be doing this at all?

First, ask the original model designer if you can distribute after modification and explain exactly how you are doing it.
If the designer is okay with what you are doing to the kit and is okay with re-distribution, then it's all good. If not, then it's only for personal enjoyment. |
