Shapeshop

Hi Everyone,
There doesn't seem to be a "software" section here so I thought this would be the best place to post this.

Shapeshop has been released. Its a free sketch-based shape creation and editing tool that works great (especially if you use a tablet). It can export .obj, that you can import into Pepakura for unfolding (or other software).

They recently redid their website and plan on releasing version 3 "soon'ish".

You can watch a demo-reel of the software in action here:

or check out the modeling basics video tutorial:

Fibermesh is also a really exciting up-coming software project for sketch-based modeling:

Though I believe it doesn't have any exporting features yet. :(

Very clever software. The "blob" method of implied or self-completing shapes should enable the imagination and intuition to overcome technique. Out comes my tablet again!

I'm having problems learning to use it, even with that demo on YouTube. I can't see where to get the textures to show up. I see a menu item about textures, but never find the actual textures. Ah, I'm probably to dumb to learn it anyway. :p

Fear not! There is a manual
http://shapeshop3d.com/downloads/ShapeShopManual.pdf

Though I think this is for v1 ... v2 has the textures I think? ... and v3 will have all kinds of new nifty things when it comes out.

You could also post on the community forums and RMS (the creator) will probably respond (and hopefully update the manual)

Great. Thanks! I wonder why I didn't see that.

Okay, I heard from RMS:

Quote:
As for adding textures, you just draw a *straight* line on the surface, and then pick the suggestion icon that looks like a red square with a "+" in the corner. You can load textures by clicking on the folder icon on the right.

But, in v002 the texture coordinates are not exported in the .obj mesh. So, it will not be super-useful for your papermodeler friends...
Hope this helps!
