Smile Yak-18PM

Hello!

I have done some design on this one about 3-4years ago using plans from old 'Modelarz' journal.
Fuselage, canopy, central part of the wing were done in 'classic way'.
The engine cover was developed in 'cone 3D' at the time, but I think I will redo it in other program soon.

Not sure how long it may take, but will try to carry on

In future, I would like to develop it into Yak-18A and 'normal' Yak-18.

Hi Cybermac,

nice plane you are designing
As far as I can see you are creating everything "by hand" without any computer aid. Tell us more about your technique.

Hi sharunas!

I was using 'old school' method on my B-737, BAe-146, Jak-18MP but now I am going digital. Haven't cracked it yet, but it makes the whole thing easier and faster as at the end you need to put everything 'on digital' to do colours, etc.

How to do the model design without computer?
First thing you need to get a proper scale drawings of desired aeroplane.
Than you need to rescale it, put into the sections with bulkheads, which you will wrap with cardboard - just like on the first photo above...

I have seen a whole tutorial somewhere online - will try to find it for you

Best regards

Here it is...

Please find section: 'Found on Internet' -> 'using a plastic model to make paper templates'

http://www.fiddlersgreen.net/TUTORIALS/fj/PAGE-1.pdf and next pages.

Are you planning your own design?

That's obvious, however "old school" method is more artistic

Oh now I see...
Actually I've also started designing models with pencil and ruler long before I've got my first computer. Only I first created whole frame and then tried to wrap it with paper. Sometimes even used carbon paper for template parts, so that I could see through where the edge of frame was.

Maybe in future "old school" method of designing will reborn as a separate category of modeling, for those who are a bit bored with digital stuff?

Design by hand? No, I'm hooked on 3D...
However I become a bit tired siting all day long with PC (at job and at home), but I'm, very fond in designing . That is why I shared my thoughts and nostalgia about old school method. Because building a model and using various tools is a relaxation while designing model on PC is almost the same as being at job.

Regards

I think, I have got the same.
8h with compputer, 2-3h drive to home.
Soon I will have even more dutes...

Old way of designing is a bit like classic paper photo in your hand.
You can see and touch what you get:-)

Best regards

Smile Yak is back:-)

Hello!

Yak is back:-)

Having a bit of time I decided to do something with this Yak...
Here is the engine cover made in Siatki and Corel, however may not be the final version because somehow thore 2 parts look for me too similar.(???)
I will try to glue it and compare it with my previous attempt in Cone3D (on the right)

kind regards

Cybermac

One sleepless night, Cone3D+Corel, a bit of glue on my clumsy fingers - and here we go
(just needs some small adjustments)

Next step - fuselage

kind regards
