Yes, true...but I must see if I can get the basic first, then maybe expand the scope

Agreed. I think I am going to stick with a painted finished. I am too damn messy while building to do it any other way

Its an older video (2012).
I question some of his "facts" about this helmet.
This Hollywood Auctions show seemed to be full of scripted untruths many times.

This is a "restored" helmet...and there have been many replicas.
So 60 years later, who knows.

There may have been more than one original helmet.
There were definitely two rubber suits.
One seamed up the back, and one seamed up the front,
for different photographic angles.
They also used a static fiberglass full bodied Gort.

I believe an original helmet is currently owned by the kid from Lost In Space.
If I am thinking of the right person, he collects props.
But I am not certain on that....
I seem to remember a more recent interview showing his collection (and he had the original Gort helmet).
And his wasn't in as perfect condition as this one is.
A most excellent resource, thanks for that Dave! I was definitely unaware of the round vents under the jawline and wasn't 100% sure of the holes in the earpieces. This does clear that up! I also think my head is a little too round from the front view on the top of the head. It seems to be a little wider than I expected.
Billy Mumy? I think he does collect props. He also had a band that had a song about fish heads...quite awhile back tho

Cory

Yeah! thats him! Billy Mumy? is that his name.
I keep getting confused with Butch Patrick (Eddie Munster)! lol

...
Those under chin air holes are quite visible in the film.

...
There is an excellent article online (somewhere) about the 7' 7" Lock Martin's experiences in the Gort suit.
I wish I could find it again.
He apparently experienced all kinds of problems with movement, over-heating, and restricted blood circulation.
In fact, in one scene in the film you can see the robot shaking his arm...
apparently Martin had lost feeling in his hands during filming.

Yep, as a kid, I probably saw every episode of Lost In Space 20 times.
It's been quite a while since I watched the movie. I just don't recall the vents or the holes in the earpieces. Not surprised though
I think the video you linked mentioned the actor was over 7 feet tall. I thought he was exaggerating. Boy was I wrong again! That guy is towering!

Lol, it's almost like a strange, full head Jason hockey mask! When I look at it, reminds me of Boba Fett as well. I'll spare the kids this year

Body Completed in Maya

So, here is the body completed. I hope. There will probably be some edits once I start unfolding. I think I may try my hand at making some inner spans and supports. I pulled some of the pieces away from each other just a bit so I could see what I was doing.
I have totally broken my self-imposed rule of papercraft by using rubber bands, and most recently, plastic. So, I thought I may try something with this one as well. Has anyone used wood putty on card stock? It's super cheap, and sand-able. I was thinking of using it to smooth the rings of the helmet. Just tossing the idea around in my head. Probably will not do it. But...maybe...just maybe...
