Transom, flat or slightly curved?

Every photo and almost every plan I've seen indicates that skipjacks had flat transoms. However, the plans of the Kathryn indicates a slight curve. I can't confirm (or deny) that from the photos of the Kathryn. Maybe, maybe not.

What do you guys think? ( Search Results: "kathryn skipjack" - Prints & Photographs Online Catalog (Library of Congress) ) I'm specifically comparing photo 30 ( 30. DETAIL OF STERN SHOWING HELM AND DAVITS AND BUMPER FOR THE PUSH BOAT - KATHRYN-Two-sail Bateau "Skipjack", Dogwood Harbor, Chesapeake Bay, Tilghman, Talbot County, MD ) with sheet 2 of the plans ( HAER MD,21-TILG.V,1- (sheet 2 of 8) - KATHRYN-Two-sail Bateau "Skipjack", Dogwood Harbor, Chesapeake Bay, Tilghman, Talbot County, MD ).

Kathryn does have a number of other skipjack anomalies so a curved transom may not be that much of a surprise. My model currently has a curved transom since I worked from the plans. But I'd rather be historical correct if I can. Am I misreading the plans? Is there any way to determine if the plans are correct?

There's a second set of more recent photos here: http://www.lastskipjacks.com/boatpho...yn_photos.html

TIA

Digital model complete...

I think the source model for the Kathryn is complete and I can now start to 'unroll' it. Or in my case, UV map the polygons by their 'normals' and stitch them back together to create developments that can be printed, folded and glued together.

I'm also tinkering with hosting my pictures elsewhere instead of always uploaded them to the PM server. Probably no need for me to be using PM server space when I've got other options.

(we'll see if this works using Google's photo albums.)

Hmmm... not working quite as I thought. Time to do some research.

Thanks!

It's moving along nicely. Attached is the latest screen shot of the work in progress. It's progressed to the layout and graphics stage in Inkscape. Unwrapping it didn't take more than a day's worth of work... though I'm not 100% sure the process is accurate since I discovered a couple of glitches. Another test build is in order before the final graphics are added.

How's the image hosting service? Anybody getting any spam pop-ups when looking at the pictures?

No spam pop-up but there was a magnifying glass icon on the picture to zoom in and when that was activated another window opened up with some sort of spam cwrap. No zoom in occured.

Kugelfang,

The Skipjacks that worked out of the Annapolis, MD docks in the 1950s certainly were not of the cookie cuter variety. They all had variations. Some were probably modifications by the owner, while others were the shipwrights' interpretations of improvements for stability, work space, or ship handling. So, I don't think you need to worry too much about differences you see in photos or plans.
