DD-850 update

Hi All;

Have managed to make and install the twenty six foot motor lifeboat. Have gotten most of the foremast in place. Think I'll have to resort to bamboo slivers and stiffened line for some of the antenna work. Doing the whole thing in card is way too cumbersome. Gathering data to draw the GH-50 DASH. It's rather intimidating in card at this scale.

Regards, rjccjr

thanks for sharing! thanks for staying at it!

awesome whaleboat!

an advantage of making the mast from wood and or wire is the ability to take it down for shipping or storage, if that is ever needed. (My father's is now in my basement).

are you going to try railings? I was going to add that to my mk 2 (which may happen.... someday).

Ahh, FRAM'ed Gearings! They were good looking Destroyers. Am absolutely following your build here
Dad was XO of DD-840 Glennon for a couple years.

He was on 3 different "rehabbed World War Two leftover" DDs, 2 Sumners and a Gearing, which was more or less a lengthened Sumner. They were DD779 Fox, DD694 Ingraham, & DD840 Glennon.
He had more fun on destroyers, said they were just simply his kind of ship.

Indeed! At least one, Glennon, 840, had two, yes 2, sonar domes for a while around mid-late 1970s. At the moment that's all I know/recall without asking Dad.

Hi stsatfbrg;

Thank you very much for the information about the QHG-50A site. It is very helpful. During research, I discovered multiple versions of the machine. The QH-50C was definitely carried by DD-850 in the waters around Cuba. The machine was notoriously unreliable on operations, yet over all cheaper than using ASROC. The problems lie in the control system, which caused the machine to have the tendency to wander off to do its own thing. The airframe was actually quite reliable. Once the bugs were worked out, it soldiered on into the late seventies. The Japanese had seventeen of them and didn't lose a one. When undertaking a project like this,l the research is half the fun. And, it has to be fun if the project is ever going to come to completion.

DD-850 update

Hi All;

Well into the detail work now, boat's in, inclined ladders also. This is the Mk III prototype and I've decided to install the final small parts. Decided to do the Mk IV as the final model. A setback occurred. After printing out twenty pages for the Mk IV, discovered that the computer decided to change the scale and the prints were a great deal larger than they should have been. So, I'm now in the process of revising the whole business. It is going to be a while before there is anything more to report.

DD-850 update

Hi All;

Looked over the problem with the computer difficulty and managed to rescue eleven out of twenty pages. Have solved the difficulty of fixing the scale of the remainder and set down the base of the Mk IV version, which will be the final job.

Decided to finish the small parts of the Mk III since it was so far along. That will solve any proportion difficulties with the later job. Repositioned the cable reels and managed to get the forward king posts in place. In 1963 most of the FRAM I's off Cuba did their replenishment from the port side of the ship. Hence the taller king post. Also got the anchors in place. Will probably replace the card chain with metal on the final version. Drawing of the DASH is under way, but the decision whether to use it or not can be held off until the last.

Here is how she looks as of yesterday.
