DD-850 update
Hi, All;
Still working on the final version of DD-850. It will take a while. Some parts need to be redrawn to obtain a better fit. Meanwhile the next project is under way. Here is the primary drawing for CL-52 as of Nov. 12, 1942. Research has turned up some surprises. Found a photograph taken from the back of an SBD right after the Santa Cruz battle. Had to work with brightness and contrast to get at the color scheme and armament details. The vertical surfaces are almost certainly painted Montbatten Pink, the gray contrast only seems to match that color. The weapons suite has been enhanced in local yards, but is pretty verifiable. Printed the primary profile in color. Have to admit it doesn't appeal very much. Scaled up the primary drawing to 1/192. Darned thing is a monster in card. Over thirty-three inches over all. That's going to be a challenge, but at least the five inch turrets are already drawn to scale. regards, rjccjr |

My, that color is a surprise. It almost seems to call out "Over here! Shoot over here!"

Hi Elliott;
Sorry about responding after so long. Regarding Montbatten pink. Actually, there was a light and a dark version of the same color. I first stumbled across it while researching HMS Curacoa, several years ago. It's really a bizarre British color, but there is a reason for it. At sunrise and sunset when light was on it a ship painted this color was extremely difficult to see.This made the angle of approach very difficult to estimate through a submarine periscope. It also shows up in black and white photos as a very dark gray. There is pretty good evidence that USS Juneau was painted in this color just weeks before her demise. The paint was from local British stock and was applied very rapidly due to conditions off Guadalcanal. Here is Curacoa along with some other shots of models made from materials other than card. Wiuth one exception all are scratch built. Regards, rlcclr |

Those are fine-looking ship models.
I enjoyed the discussion of Mountbatten Pink and the likelihood that Juneau was painted in that color. I thought I knew a fair amount about ships and ship colors of the Pacific War, but in the last month I have learned about Chicago Blue and that Juneau was painted in Mountbatten Pink (I knew about the color, but that a South Pacific U.S. Navy cruiser was so painted stopped me in my tracks). I learn a lot hanging out in this Forum. Don |

Hi again;
Here are the DD-850 update pictures and a stray HMS Sheffield. Got a little side tracked recently, and am working of the design of DD-793 USS Cassin Young, along with everything else. Regards, rjccjr |

update 7 3 19
Hi;
Been plodding along rather slowly, but the final version is starting to look decent. The model is tighter and more detailed than the prototype. If you take the trouble to look at the old version, it's easy to see the differences. Saving the deck supports for nearly the end since they have a tendency to bend while the model is being transported from one place to another. regards, rjccjr |

DD-850 update
Hello All;
Finally got the deck supports in, along with the after ECM structure and mast details. Cutting out those tiny triangles was fun. Just have to figure out the mooring bitts, an ocean and then on to the rigging. Regards, rjccjr |

DD-850 update
Hi All;
Nearly finished the final version. Only the ensign and rigging to go. Took some pictures with the prototype and final together, so that you can see the differences. Finding the Des Ron symbol was quite a hunt, but that's what research is all about. Finally got lucky, then drawing the symbol and reducing it to scale got more complicated than anticipated. Anyway it is now on the model. Regards, rjccjr |
