Dd-850

After finishing Seydlitz, the zany idea occurred to try a Gearing class DD. Actually, two models, one as launched, an one as retired. Thought it wouldn't take forever as it did for Seydlitz. Well, the as launched version is now unlikely as I would have to live to be 127 or so. But, a Cuban missle crisis version is coming along. It is still in the basic stages of design, but shows promise. See attached.

Dd-850

Hi;

Here are a few more development pictures of DD-850. Scale is 1/192. Have gotten to the Mk II prototype. Made a big error in the color of the horizontal surfaces. They are dark gray, not WWII dark blue. Finding significant detail differences in the 1962 version as opposed to the museum vessel as she now exists.
Happy holidays to all.

Regards rjccjr

progress report DD-850

Hi all:

Here are a few pictures, taken this week. It's a long way from small parts, but the general configuration is good. The gun director rotates, and the guns elevate and rotate. Haven't gotten that far with the ASROC mount.

Regards, rjccjr

Awesome!

I built eCardmodels pre FRAM version for my father. I hacked it pretty bad, his ship was 851, eCardmodels is a radar picket version. The variations on these ships was pretty wild. Even from weekday to Sunday's the ship could change. My father was CO in 1959 and let me know -50 years later - that the model I tweaked had a quite few mistakes (the funnel size, the cork rafts, the torpedo launcher). But he was still touched.

Hi All;

It just happens that a friend did several years duty on a FRAM MkI gearing. He has been an invaluable source of information. When started, this was supposed to be a fairly quick job. The more information gathered, the more it demonstrated the principle that no two ships are alike, and no single ship stays alike for very long.

With the actual vessel sitting sitting in the water at Fall River good photographs are easy to obtain. Problem turned out to be that I was attempting to do the ship as it was configured during the Cuban missile crisis. It was just out of conversion at the time. Well, she ship in Fall River does not look like the 1962 version. Trying to get to 1962 turned out to be a lot tougher than expected. At the moment the project goal appears attainable, just a lot slower than originally estimated.

Here are a few shots of the development as of this week. Not at all happy with the stack caps. They need to be revised. The rest is coming along satisfactorily. Estimated time of completion? Who Knows, but I'm really happy to be retired.

Regards, rjccjr

update

Revised the stack caps, an improvement but not satisfactory. Getting those curves correct is a lot of work. Added the triple torpedo mounts. They seem OK.

May day update;

Had to redesign the bridge wings and railings and to reduce the size of the shack below the after mast. The shack and mast structure on the 1962 version are significantly smaller than those of the current museum ship. The diameter of the foremast tripod posts needs to be reduced as well.
