1992 Williams FW14B

A new project has started!! After I designed the MP4/7, I knew I had to do the FW14B, which won Nigel Mansell's first and only championship. Like the McLaren, I'm using Inkscape to design the whole model.

Here is the first version of the nose I drew today. I'm experimenting with the nose design, because the FW14 has a raised nose profile, and I find it hard to nail the curvy shape without 3D software.

Just did a test build of the nose... Just a bit of tweaking, and I'll go straight for the body!

I redesigned a few parts to make the "curve" more visible. The process was actually pretty simple. I simply moved a few nodes, measured the ends of the parts, and voilą, you get the curve.
Looks a lot better than the "flat top" from yesterday.

Added some "colour" to the nose. Now I'll design the rest of the car.

The development continues!! Things are really coming together now. Did the first livery check, and I need to correct the nose fitting.

Quite fine.

BTW, when I was doing my FW15c, I have made 5 sections of the front upper fuselage:

Wow, I didn't know you were a member here, Robert!!

I didn't use any 3D software for this, so I had to simplify everything as much as I can... But man, that nose looks just like the real thing!! I'd love to get hold of one of your kits.

oh this is cool!
I didn't know there was a model of this car.
And now you are creating another one!
I think I will finally have to break down and build an F1 car model!

My cousin is Nigel Mansell!

No, not this one...but hes named after race car driver Nigel Mansell! lol

I met the real Mansell a few years back...just after he left Ferrari and moved to Indy Cars.
He was on promotional tour for K-Mart ( an Indy Car sponsor).
LOL I had him autograph a painting I did...of Gerhard Berger's Ferrari! lol
It was the only thing I had completed at the time!

Unfortunately I lost the signed artwork to a Sports dealer who ran off with a bunch of my artworks.
But I still have the K-Mart poster that Mansell signed for me.

I had followed his F1 career closely, so it was a big thrill to meet him.
I had switched my interest to Indy car racing in the 90s,
so it was very exciting to see him come to North America to live and race

and win the Indy car championship after winning the F1 championship!

When I was young I used to make me F1 cars out of paper, but never the way of today“s papercrafts - I never had painted parts to cut out. I always painted my models afterwards. (So from beginning they were not so nice, painted by colour markers and later they were like plastic models, where I have used enamels and decals.) But they were done always just in one piece.

Now I am doing it for another people, so that“s why I use 3d software, so as I could prepare everything in computer with cca good accuracy.

3D software is just cheating.
Who wants to be a cheater?!

3D software is great for sorting out compound curves.
But Paper only bends in one direction anyway.

And for smaller scale stuff, simplification works.

I use modeling software for truncated cones and angled tubes, but thats all.
Everything else is math and brain.

But I do create all my patterns and artwork in Coreldraw for better precision.
