I think, Zio's model are great as they are. I will try and build this myself, to make sure things do not seem out of place between this and the original parts.

Hi all,

The model is now available in the downloads section. Thank you for all the support and the admins for making this possible. The printing instructions are more convoluted than usual as it is about trying to mate with another kit.

If anyone do decide to build this, please feel free to share the build. Please contact me for any querys regarding this

Beautiful Texture

Hello Lex,


your underwater hull is really great. I like the textured Version very much!


May i ask, how you textured the hull. Did you texture the 3d Modell and then unfolded it, or did you do the texture after you unfolded the templates?


You mentioned earlier, that you use Rhino.



I just ask, since i use Blender with the unfolder script.

Hi Thomas,

I am very happy that you liked the effect. I do both things actually. It is a very interesting topic.

Anything that does not require accurately lining up between parts, I will safely paint in Photoshop. So all the blotches and fake rib lines are entirely done as a post-process. Any potential mismatch will be less than noticeable as it is a non-directional texture.

For the creases between platings though, I drew them as lines on the 3D Rhino model as these lines need to line up between parts. Rhino is very good with anything vector-based, and its unfold function allows unfolding any curves that lie on the surface being unfolded. The unfolded parts, with the panel lines attached to them, are exported into Photoshop together, and I painted the panels and rivets using these unfolded lines (stroke path, or other similar functions).

In the end, working with Rhino allows access to its powerful surface and vector tools, but at the same time an abysmal texturing functionality (for CG or digital painting purposes, that is), and here I am trying to work around what's available to me. If I need to paint a continuous texture (that can not be vectorised easily, for example a commemorative aircraft livery), I will opt for the Rhino-3dsMax-Pepakura (HD edition)-Photoshop combination, which can ultimately solve all above issues.

For the Blender-Unfolder pipeline, since it is working with a polygon-based model, texture painting should be much easier as there are - you name it - countless software that allows one to paint directly on a 3D model.

Blender and other open source software

Hello Lex,



you're welcome.
For several reasons I switched to Linux respectively to Ubuntu almost ten years ago. Since that time i use Blender, which i got to know through the german Kartonbau Forum.

By wine, the emulator, one could also use windows Software, but i'am not really happy with that since the emulator needs its additional processor power. In so far i just use Gimp, Inkscape and Blender and for me as a Hobbyist it's absolutely okay.

But i think for a professional graphic Designer or a Photographer this software may be not suitable enough.
Okay that's another subject
