Started the prototype build. Just roughing it in with regular printer paper in 8.5x11 size. I figure start cheap! I re did the base cube and will update the download shortly. Then tomorrow color print on card stock! This is just two freebie layers over the new revision of the base cube. But, this is proof of concept enough for me.

You're off to a good start John. Looks to be a promising build.

No pictures today. I have spent the last week or so refining the assembly instructions and re-scaling some parts...and designing an LED light system based off a hacked solar garden light...and then figuring out the best way to incorporate it into the design so that the solar cell still works without sacrificing all that papery insanity.
I've also been teaching myself this digital art stuff to provide some more detailed greeble grids for the last three external layers. I have enough plastic sprues here I'm even considering assembly of an actual greeble panel or two, then painting and photographing it. I haven't quite figured out how to turn a color photo into a transparent .png yet, but one of my students has a green screen rig set up in one of our computer labs and assures me he can help me out with that. One thing I've learned from this project is that the cutting and gluing is tyhe EASY part! |

Finally got the corrected version uploaded. Also have it printed out. Time for some serious cutting!

Update
I haven't abandoned this project, just had to put it on hold for a bit whilst I finish other builds I have going on.
I have done a few test builds, one with 12 layers of greebles scaled at 30 x30 cm. Good news is the design is workable, but still needs lots of polish. If any of you are playing with this and have input, I'd love to hear from you. I'm pretty handy at building other's designs, but learning that I need lots more practice in designing. |
