Borg Cube Futility Greeble Madness Edition
Trying my hand at designing my own models.
I figured I'd start simple...you know...just a cube or something... Well, my love of intricate detail and my complete lack of a social life led to what I'm calling the Futility Greeble Madness Edition of the Borg Cube as it was first seen way back in 1989 during the second season of TNG. Given the original was a block of plastic sprues, I decided I'd up the game a bit a make a cube with multiple layers of paper "sprues". The paint job isn't that detailed, but it doesn't have to be. I finally relized the only layer requiring precision is the first, the physical paper cube itself. The sprues are going to be fun to cut out... Heres some samples of whats in the kit. I sure could use critiques and suggestions, as I really have no Idea what I'm doing! |

Great idea - mad, but great. That's a lot of cutting out.

Sure is. As long as you're OK with all that cutting - Proceed.

I just printed out all the parts I need to start the test build.
I'm already hating myself. I need a break from the other five builds I have going on right now, so this at least should be frustrating enough to keep me occupied. I'm not to worried about the cutting, but the assembly is gonna be a pain I think. |

I love this idea... and yes, you are mad for trying to do it.
That being said... I want to build one too. |

'Your Greeble will adapt to service us, resistance is futile'
That second section is going to be a 'challenge' with the curves and diagonal pieces. I guess the advantage of all the stuff that's going on is that mistakes and miss cuts can be easily hidden but still quite a challenge. |

And yes, by design, the greebles are very forgiving. If you slip or tear a section, no big deal, just slap it on with some glue. One could even skip the curve cuts if so desired. The good news is the base cube and the initial grid worked as planned perfectly. I think however that one might be worth the effort of laminating a few sheets together to really get some shadowy depth . I'm worried the green "glow" might be too bright, or perhaps not bright enough, but only time and many many layers will tell. |

You’ve made the project sound interesting.
Is there a build thread coming from you? ;-)

Well, found the first bug.
The scaling on the first page of the kit is messed up. If you downloaded this already, you will find the 1.8 version base cube is way off. I will rectify that shortly and update the file accordingly. Good news is I tried printing on A4 and US 8.5x11 at different scales and there were no issues of fit and such. I also noticed printing is kind of wonky given where I stuck the instructions in. I'll rectify that tonight also. |
