DD-793 update
Hi All;
Here is the development of the five inch turret, just the build. It is now in place, rotates and elevates. Why do that? It makes the model more pose able for photography, and like the mountain, it was there. It takes about a week to make one. Only four more to go. Regards, rjccjr |

DD-793 update
Hi;
Just a quick update DD-793 now has all five elevatable and rotatable turrets. Now I'm dealing with rotation tables for the quad forties. That will take a while. The smaller weapons will not get the same treatment. It is almost ready for the mast work. Regards, rjccjr |

DD-793 update
Hi All;
One element, while involved in this undertaking, is the fact that no matter how carefully you work, it always pays to build what you design. That way you discover what works and what doesn't. For example, the original design of the rotator tables for the turrets did work, but the center pin was weak and easily gave way under handling. So design number two was tried. In that case, the center pin was much stronger, but the bottom ring was too narrow and difficult to glue. If the glue was applied to the outside of the rings, everything held together and the assembly worked, but if the glue was attached directly to the ring, it froze the pin. The third attempt is workable and can be glued either way. Actually they all work, but if you aren't awfully careful, frustration comes too easily. Here is a photo which includes all three versions. Careful perusal will show you why the third option is the better choice. Regards, rjccjr |

DD-793 update
Hi All;
The first quad 40MM assembly finally came together. The entire unit is less the an inch wide. There are twenty eight pieces in it right now and about a dozen more to go. The unit rotates very nicely, but it is beyond my ability to make it elevate. It is simply too small to attempt. DD-850 is set beside DD-793 so you can see the difference in the size of the turrets in the same scale. It seems that no matter how well the plan goes, I always wind up redrawing the major assemblies as they go along. It is very rewarding when something goes right. Regards, rjccjr |

DD-793 update
Hi;
Worked on quad 40 MM this week. Starboard side of mount has some detail. Looks like there will be fifty one pieces per mount. Spent half the week redrawing the twin mount aft. You might think that the twin would be easier, just a half of the quad. Not so. It is a very different set up, but the good side is that there is only one to do. Of course these patterns are common to many ships. Theoretically they will be available for other versions and other ship designs, if I ever finish this one. Regards rjccjr |

Hi all;
Have completed the first quad 40 MM battery and am on to the second. The best I can do with part reduction still leaves it at fifty nine parts. never expected that this unit would be so complex for something so small. Make one glad that it isn't the battleship Wisconsin. It will probably take the best part of a week to complete the second one. The twin battery is completely redrawn that looks like it will only be thirty seven pieces. At least the are accurate. Regards rjccjr |

DD-793 update
Hi All;
Well, the twin 40 MM mount is now aboard and the base for the director as well. The twin forty rotates, but it is just on a pin and is not really satisfactory. Have to think about that some more. The mast work and radar antennae are redrawn and are being test fitted. Scrutiny of the mast tripod reveals that the original tripod was cut down and the after legs re-positioned. The stubs of the original legs are visible just aft of the foreleg, if you stand on the pier and look directly upward. Here are photos of the prototype just before the mast work is attached. It will be all small parts from here on. Regards,rjccjr |

DD-793 update
Hi All;
Just completed the first try at getting the tripod mast in place. It took quite a few attempts to get the legs of the tripod assembled and correctly fitted, because the tolerances are so tight. On the real ship there are welded plates, which extend the width of the upper deck so that the rear legs will not interfere with the forward stack. In 192nd scale, that doesn't leave a lot of room for clearance. The AN SPS 28 radar screen is sitting at the base of the model, for now. The support is drawn but not assembled yet, as is the AN SPS10. Attaching them to the model is going to be a real bear. It will have to be a time when the tremors are fairly under control, to avoid crushing the entire assembly and having to go around again. DD-793 is getting too close to completion to even think of quitting now. Regards, rjccjr |
