When you do get to the AA guns...

The Gearing had only twin mounts. Sorry,

I drew mine with the magazines and canvas covers on. White on the bridge, black on the 01 deck.

Which brings up the favorite and perplexing part of ship designs. Even on Sundays the ship could change. I don't know but I can imagine the canvas covers and spray cloths for that matter, all being white on Sundays or port call days. I really hope they did not change the bridge awnings! I never thought to ask my Father. He would have remembered too! He pointed out after 40 years that the funnels on my mark 1 build were "a tad smallish."

I have since joined one or two facebook groups where they discuss such serious things as dateline crossing ceremonies and configurations and plaques.

What will you do about railings? I left them off, and always thought the model looked a little naked.

I found a picture of my twin mount Bofors. I attached it, but have no idea what will happen when I click 'submit,'

I see what I did for the quad Bofors mounts, I put two twins.

If nothing else, I thank you for this little trip down memory lane.

DD-793 update

Hi;

Work has started on the stacks and turrets. Typically, the original drawings needed adjustment, actually several adjustments. If the stack tube isn't just right, the stack caps will give a lot of problems. The turret as seen here has not provision for gun elevation or turret rotation. There are drawings ready. but the turret cabin has to fit the ship properly for them to be adjusted. The model is still in the boiler plate stage. You can see all the areas which needed refitting. The actual prototype will not be too long away. That will include all of the small details. Here are two shots to show the current progress.

Regards, rjccjr

DD-793 update

Hi All;

The stacks fit properly now. So attention has been turned to the turrets. The goal was to get the elevating mechanism to fit the turret and elevate properly. Work on the rotator will wait to later.The first shot shows the stacks in place. The stack base had been a three part assembly, now it is a single much cleaner piece. The second shows the gun elevator ready for the turret. The third shows the turret in place with a ruler so you can judge the sized of the whole business. Last shows a side view as of this morning. It's interesting to note how the model goes from a stack of blocks to something like a warship as soon as there are stacks and turrets.

DD-793 update

Hi Folks;

Been quiet of late, because work is being done. The mock-up got as far as it was intended to go and the actual prototype is in progress. The stack caps were a nightmare. The covers are no mistake. They are on the ship to keep weather and critters out, the grid is underneath. Here are some pictures. Some have the mock-up for comparison. The turrets will be left off for much later so small parts can be addressed and they won't be in the way. The gun director now rotates. When the turrets go in they will rotate and elevate. Pretty small packages, those. The other photos are USS Susquehanna. The picture is very poor because the dust cover raises havoc with reflections, and is too heavy for one person to remove.The red canister is my pet shop vac,Dewey.

Regards, rjccjr

DD-793 update

Hi All;

DD-793 has gotten to the detail stage, which slowed everything down. It seems that with each segment something invariably needs to be redrawn. That, coupled with waiting for the time of day when the tremors moderate, conspires to slow progress. It's why a build takes several years to complete. The tremors are what makes the build sloppy. To date, the depth charge rack arrangement and torpedo battery are installed. The battery is now able to rotate. The rotation tables for the five inch guns are now under construction. Here are some progress pictures.

Regards, rjccjr

Some would call that lightning speed!
Looking very good, and takes me back to my own DD-851 build. Thanks for that.

Good work. It has been interesting watching your progress on this build and you comments on the process.
