Hello Petestein,
U-2 '56-6693' of Gary Powers is definitely on the top of the repaints list. Shouldn't be much trouble, but needs some thorough research. I have only just started with that and this is what I found out: - there are only some photos of the wreckage of the airplane. - the airplane was originally produced as U-2A but got modified (partially) to 'C' version. (For example, the air intakes are described as 'interim' air intakes, not the coke bottles' which is a bit puzzling. To me they look like the ones from A,B,D version unless we have got something 'between' 'A' and 'C' intakes?) - no long dorsal spine canoe on top, - big 'slipper tanks' attached to the wings, - B camera, 3 & 6 COMINT antenna. - the airplane was painted with (dark) sea blue FS35042 (which is not a black matt as some sources are showing!). - there was a red number '360' on the tail, but of the unknown height and no other markings except emergency markings (RESCUE/arrows). Well, nearly 60 years after the most famous U-2 '56-6693' was shot down and yet we can't be 100% certain of how it looked like during its service. kind regards Last edited by Cybermac; 04-20-2020 at 07:14 PM. |

Just went through the photos that are in the book,OPERATION OVERFLIGHT by Gary Powers.
The photos they show look like publicity photos from Lockheed. Two photos of it in Russia after the shootdown, not much to see, pile of junk. For some reason thought a photo of the one shot down was in the book. Mike |

Hello Gents,
To give you a bit of flavor of what is coming after U-2D 'skunk works' (aka black squirrel) I have done a quick test of the (dark) sea blue FS35042 color transferred into Corel palette. Please see below. About a project - it looks like I need to divide a 'cabin segment' onto two sections, simply because the cabin dimensions from top and side don't match. Simply saying, the bloody thing called airplane canopy doesn't want to meet with the fuselage. After a bit of search I found a photo which gives me an additional cross-section, so no worries! kind regards |

You're doing a fantastic job, congratulations. Can't wait to build it after so many years waiting a detailed U-2 Spyplane

I suppose you will include structural formers in the fuselage. It would be a shame not to.

Scissorsandplanes has a 1/300 U-2B which wouldn't be too hard to convert over to a U-2D dressed in that livery.

Hello gents,
@ Petestein - Formers/cross-sections are going to be an essential part of the model. Possibly there is going to be a bit of 'skeleton structure' if/when the cabin interior and main landing gear will be designed. @ NACA X CRAFT - U-2B 1/300 - that is a nice little tinny model! Project update - working on the new cabin's segment cross-section (airplane photo). kind regards Cybermac |

Hello, gents,
Project update - I think I know what the problem is. Although the new mid-cabin crosssection fits OK the front of the canopy doesn't fit because the cross-section of the fuselage is not the circular one. I am on that cross-section which seems to be elliptical one flattened a bit from the top. Well, I am still learning kind regards |
