Cool U-2a/d

Hello gents,

I have been looking through the internet for a 1/33 or 1/32 paper model of this famous jet. I looked for hours and hours and looks like there isn't one, although there are 2 of TR-1 (U-2R). So I have decided some time ago to try my luck with the 'dragon lady'.

The main plans I am using are from old issue of Aviation News (UK) with some help from Aviatsya & Vremya (Ukraine) plans.

I just had 2 weeks off (being off sick) and because I am still waiting for moe documentation for B-737, I could do a bit with this one...

My choice, for now, is a 'peaceful looking' white U-2D with a red stripe and a little skunk on the tail

As you can see on the photo below, two sections already needed the correction (cabine and tail section).

...

Hello gents,

The Murph's U-2 is 1/51 scale, so you can enlarge it to 1/33 and you may get a decent result I think.

However, my question is, was there any proper scale (1/33) model of Lockheed U-2A/C/D issued through the years at all or not?

I couldn't find any which seems to be a bit weird as for the famous airplane which got onto the first pages of the newspapers all around the world almost 60 years ago.

The only info I found on the internet was that somebody tried to issue a Lockheed U-2 in Eastern Germany (early '70s?) but the whole thing got stopped by communist censorship and publishing company was closed down!

Anyway, back to the project...

I going through all kinds of photos of U-2 because there are only a few with the correct angle I need. That is to get the correct shape of the fuselage and cross-sections just like on 1st photo.

Also, there are only very few photos/drawings of the painting scheme I am doing. Please see the bottom one on the 2nd attachment (should have 66722 no. on the tail).
(The drawing I found comes from Hungarian modeling site: modernwartech.blog.hu)

kind regards

Cybermac

Afaik only Aaron Murphy and Nobi did respectable U-2 models in scales 1:51 and 1:48 respectively.

I don't think any of Polish outlets did it (to my surprise).

That paint scheme may be fictional, which is why there aren't many photos of it. The skunk on the tail is the logo for Lockheed's Skunk Works, and I don't think they had their own private U2.

Smile 56-6722 Skunk

Hello gents,

@ Butelczynski - the second one by Nobi (Thai paperwork) is actually U-2R (TR-1) in 1/48 scale which a different (much bigger) airplane.

I am not surprised there was no Lockheed U-2 model in Eastern Germany or Poland till 1989 but I would have a guess there should be at least one issued in so-called 'western countries'.
Just now I have been informed by one of our forum mates that there was one model issued by Schreiber Bogen in Germany

@ murphyaa - from what I found on the internet I can say that at least a bigger part of this painting scheme is real.

There were 2 U-2D (serial nos. 56-6721 + 56-6722) specially painted for Air Force Flight Test Center (white with red stripe).
Both had a big red 'AFFTC' lettering on the tail.
According to what I found 'AFFTC' letters got replaced with 'Skunk works' logo in 1977, and the airplane was used at Edwards AFB.

The 'Skunk works' logo on '56-6722' appears also in BUNRINDO - Famous Airplanes Of The World no. 171.
I have a few of those great aviation monographs from Japan and I think they wouldn't put that scheme if that would be some kind of 'aviation sci-fi'.

Anyway, even if the 'little skunk' appeared on U-2D only occasionally, I can always make an 'AFFTC' tail as well

Please see the attachments

kind regards

Smile side view

Hello gents,

From what I found out, the paper model from Schreiber Bogen (Germany) appears to be a nice and simple vintage model of 1/50 scale, out of production for many years.

And here is a colored side view of '56-6722' with a red stripe with well-known animal.
By the way according to my little one this is a 'black squirrel'

The next painting scheme could be a black one of the same '56-7622' airplane.
Later on maybe a 'silver one' could follow. However, that would need some tests with printing on 'metallic' cardboard and homemade decals from what I can see now.

I hope you are all OK and if you stay at home because of coronavirus self-quarantine you have some time for your beloved hobby!

Interesting discussion.

I am going to bring this thread to the attention of a buddy who flew U-2s for many years.

I look forward to seeing your model, Cybermac.

...another U-2R model

Hello gents,

@ Don Boose - that would be great to get any suggestions, infos from a real U-2 pilot!
If you could please ask you mate if he have got any photos of the U-2 he flew.

By the way I found another paper model of U-2 (R version?, scale??) among the other models in this particular book by Michael Johnson: 'Paper planes 2' from 1991.

Kind regards

Cybermac
