A gap in the market?

Hello all,

As a former member of the Royal Navy, I have always looked for and built any available models. In paper though these are mostly limited to WW1 and 2. Post-war examples are few and far between, so my plan is to create a new range in 1/400 scale, starting with this one. This ship was my first posting in 1974 after several months of basic training and, like all veterans, is one which takes a fond place in my heart.

This is a project which has been bubbling away for several years now and so I slotted this in between other build projects. Using plans and photos from the web I have managed to crate a set of lines for the hull.

This is the rough layout with construction lines and still some adjustments to make. I intend to make this available through Ecard Models and hopefully should be the start of a new range of Post-war RN vessels. I have have quite a range of others to research, but if anyone has any suggestions, then post them here.

Great news.

I would love to see the Leopard Class - actually HMS Jaguar, a ship I went on a few times in the 1970's!

A great project, Bernie. I'm glad to see you applying your experience and skill to designing, especially a ship on which you served.

I will follow with interest.

Bernie -

I have been trying to identify your ship, and I am baffled.

Admittedly, I do not have any special expertise on post WWII Royal Navy warships, but have looked through the references available to me and cannot find a ship with the hull lines depicted on your drawings. The closest I can come is the Type 41 Leopard class of the 1950s, which has the two gun mounts and superstructure and the almost-flush deck, but also has a slightly raised forecastle and cut down stern, which are not consistent with your drawing.

In any event, it looks like a bonny vessel.

FRD, Kevin and SG, thanks for stopping by. I will add Cat and Cathedral class to the list. I hope to do Type 14 class frigates and County class DLG's next.

Don, it is this handsome Lady.

HMS Gurkha, Type 81 General Purpose Frigate, one of the class of Tribals. A happy ship, I served on her for 18 months as a Junior Stoker, before moving on to Coastal Forces as a Stoker 1st class.
