Medium D British Interwar Light Tank
I started designing a 1/48 scale cardmodel of the British Medium D tank some years ago, and set it aside for want of sufficient information. Hans van Oerle sent me a package of drawings and photographs this past week, so I am back on it.
The attached images show the 3D model under development, and some screen shots of my CAD worksheet. I am currently working on the tracks and suspension. |

Added left tracks, and modified the front idler and rear drive wheel to accommodate the track shoes. The model will have paper track shoes and info for alternative balsa pieces.
Fortunately, the suspension is hidden by the track frames. It used a system of wire ropes and pulleys instead of springs, and I do not yet really understand how it worked. There were two different superstructures. The early version had a curved roof, and the second version a flat one. My model is of the flat-roofed version. There were also variations in the rails supporting the upper track run, and the exhaust system layout. Hans pointed out that some of the photos indicated that the rear hull compartments were empty and open on top (for flotation?). Mine will be closed. |

Left side track frame is complete and copied to right side. Tracks are not yet duplicated to right side, exposing the idler wheel in front and drive wheel in rear, showing the grooves to fit the track shoes. Next come the details on the superstructure and top of the hull.

The 3D model is practically finished. Tracks on right side would be a duplicate of those on the left side. Next phase is "exploding the solid parts into flat sheets as cardmodel parts.

Great design work Wayne. Amazing how big this tank was considering the small caliber weaponry.
