Gil - So you're saying starting all strakes amidships is sufficient? You don't think I need to bother with multiple strips per strake?
Careful now - If my next hull comes out crooked, you get to set it right Cheers, Oliver

Thanks for providing a link to your models. Don't know if I'll ever build one, but sure do like looking at them.

Tenacious Success...,
Oliver,
I think I recommended 0.5 to 1.0 mm thick on the earlier thread. 0.5 mm should work at the scale your using. I suggest using 0.5 mm chip board. Do not moisten the chip board due to the high shrink factor. Penetrating the card with thinned sanding sealer lacquer allows for better sanding properties. It's really great to see your progress in this effort. Tenacious success is something that must always be learned the hard way. +Gil P.S. If it comes out "weenie" shaped I'll deny all culpability...., |

A little further up I was griping about the paper fuzz when I was sanding the hull. I went out and looked up different kinds of veneer. One company was kind enough to send me samples of what they call "Paperwood" - paper thin, real wood veneer. It's been treated with some kind of polymer, but for all intents and purposes it's real wood. You can get it either "straight up" or with paper backing. The paper-backed kind is a lot thinner than the plain version.
You can even feed this stuff through a laser printer, so you could easily make a "natural wood" looking model using card modeling techniques. I think I'm going to try this stuff on the "Solferino" model. I know, I know - it's not card. But I have been lying awake at night, wondering how I'm going to pull off the coppered hull at 1/250 scale. A nice alternative would be to use the cherry paperwood and then just clear-coat it. It's kind of copper-tone, you'd see all the strakes, and it may add an artistic touch. One problem remains though: the place has a $100 order minimum Cheers, Oliver

The USS Alarm project has now entered the regular card modeling phase... I'm going to continue the project in a new thread.
I'll pick this thread up when I'm doing the next plank-on-frame hull. Cheers, Oliver
