Designing the De Havilland Comet-4

...The infamous "metal fatigue" airliner used as a standard case study in Mech Props lectures... I really appreciate its design so I decided to make a model of it (and to fill Phil's request of making something "civil" ^O^). Designing an airliner is really not as hard as a fighter jet, after just two days of work it's already beginning to take shape. But since this is a subject from the fifties I had trouble finding photo references and might have to go see the real thing... Any help would be appreciated ^^

That is a terrific idea, I would look really forward to a nice model of the Comet. There is a good 3 view drawing on this site:
http://richard.ferriere.free.fr/3vues/3vues.html#d
which I believe is in the public domain.
At the below site, you can see photo's of the Nimrod, which at least has the same wing and engines as the Comet.

Note, however, that the engine intakes were modified to take by-pass jet engines, and are therefore somewhat larger than the previous models.
It will be nice to have some more civil airliners in the forum. I'll folloe your progress with interest, good luck!

Hello!
I`m pleased that you started designing of Comet. I`ll be attentively to observe progress of your design.

Aha, Lex: I`m reserving the place for smoking by the window (I will open a window during the flight in order not to smoke to inside ) in the tourist class. And I hope that there will be pretty stewardesses? :D

Best regards.

Many thanks Scon10!! Those references were terrific! (Busy grabbing the landing gear pics...)

The marking scheme would be for BOAC, and others if I have proper incentives ^O^ I also hope to release a Comet-2 version because the difference is only slight.

Nice subject for a model. I am not all that familiar with the Comet, but was this the model which had square windows which were blamed for several accidents? And did the Comet-2, as you called it, have circular windows?

Great subject

Oh yes, this would be a great model. Maybe a version in RCAF markings with the nice red fuselage flash if you have the time :D. If I remember correctly, I think I read that in Canadian service they were the first military jet transports anywhere at that time. I will be watching with interest.

Regards,
John

Wow............. I just found the thread..............and the really wierd thing is I was just looking at one of the books(Ancient thing that were used before the Internet) and was reading up on the Comet and thought to myself............"Hey I wish someone would make a model of this ground breaking plane"

Touche Lex!

Neat it's a cicilian bird, but it should would be nice to make a Nimrod after you get this one done............. to mess with Phil (just kidding Phil you know I luv ya!:D)............... but because that is another bird that's not modeled for us either! And it really did prove the Comets' great design in the first place.

If the British had pulled the Comet off aviation would be quite different today. I look forward to your design and especially look forward to your CAD/Card model program.
