Fledgling designer needs professional help

Since I can't seem to actually complete the construction of a model I thought I would give a whirl at trying to join the "Designers Club". I have the following tools available:

IntelliCAD 4
Paint Shop Pro XI
Evaluation version of Rhino

I have 3-view drawings in .jpg format but cannot figure out how to get them into IntelliCAD or Rhino since neither of them like .jpg as an import source. I suspect I need to bring the .jpg drawing into PSP and construct my line drawings as a seperate layer and then save in a format compatible with IntelliCAD or Rhino.

I am open to any suggestion that does not require spending any money or installing additional software (sort of kidding...)

Thanks in advance for your assitance.

I'm not a designer, but I heard this software is god and free:

Also this one, The Gimp, a free Photoshop-like software:

milenio3: Hey, only Eric Clapton is God (just kidding folks)!

OldTroll: You could try using paint.net which is free to download and very versatile as far as file compatibility.

Don't know about intellicad but the only way Rhino will use a jpg is by using the Background Bitmap command.

Silly question, but have you tried opening the .jpg in ms paint (or another image program, irfanview is a nice free one) and seeing if there's a format you can convert to that intellicad or rhino would like?

(Much more of a beginner than you - just trying to help ).

Use the Rhino "background bitmap" command and then pick "place." Make certain that you have the correct view selected (it reverts to wherever your mouse is hovering after picking the file). I use .jpgs as my drawings in Rhino.

My process is to take a drawing, usually starting in .tif, and use PSP to convert it to .jpg. I'll also take the opportunity to cut away things that I don't want in a view and sometimes to white out confusing lines and things. Then fire up Rhino and put it in as a background bitmap in the views. Usually I use a top view, a side view and a front view. After getting the hull right (Dunno if you're doing ship or plane or what) I'll hide the front view and use top, side and 3D to do my 3D model building. After getting the thing built, I use the "smash" command to convert a piece into a flat - this takes some practice with double curved parts and whatnot. "Smash" also will disassemble a 3D structure like a deckhouse and I have to spend a few minutes getting it organized in the correct layout again using "move" and "rotate." I then "dupedge" to get the edges and delete the skin itself. Then output it into .wmf and bring it up again into PSP for painting.
