Working with DXF files...

Man, I am so disgusted. I finally got Pepakura to open on my computer, and whenever I try to open a DXF file, it has huge holes, gaps, and missing parts all over the place! I have this wireframe I've been working on for over a week now, 3 to 5 hours a day, some days up to 6 hours a day. There are over 300 faces, and over 600 points in this wireframe, and over three fourths of them end up missing whenever I try to open the file in Pepa.

So, if there is anyone who has a prog that opens DXF files who is willing to take a look at this wireframe, please let me know.

Thanks!

I was curious, but I had to look up what a DXF file is, as will anyone who doesn't know.

It wasn't too hard to find out...
I just Googled DXF file and found a definition that explains what a DXF file is
and what programs DXF files are compatible with.
Anyone could do this...in advance,
and then know what programs to start with or what programs to ask for.

or just ask someone else to do all the work for you,

according to "The File Extensions Resource" [http://www.fileinfo.com/extension/dxf]

File Type Drawing Exchange Format File
Popularity 5 stars Very Common
Category Vector Image Files
File Description Data format developed by Autodesk and used for CAD (computer-aided design) vector image files,
such as AutoCAD documents; similar to the .DWG format, but is more compatible with other programs since it is ASCII (text) based.

The DXF format was developed as a universal format so that AutoCAD documents could be opened more easily with other programs;
for example, the Valve Hammer Editor can export 3D models as DXF files, which can be opened and edited with other 3D modeling applications.
Program(s) that open dxf files

Mac OS
IMSI TurboCAD Deluxe 16
PowerCADD PowerDWG translator
Microspot DWG Viewer
SolidWorks eDrawings Viewer
NeoOffice Draw
OpenOffice.org Draw
DataViz MacLink Plus

Windows
Autodesk AutoCAD
IMSI TurboCAD Deluxe 16
SolidWorks eDrawings Viewer
Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2
ACD Systems Canvas 11
DWG converter such as DWG2Image Converter
OpenOffice.org Draw

Linux
OpenOffice.org Draw

Pepakura isn't in the list, so it seems like you wasted your time trying to open it in Pep.
...and I can't help, since i don't use any of the programs listed.
Anyone else?

Chris:

Will you please delete this thread?

I am sick to damn death of people kibbitzing just to criticize. If they can't help, by God they're going to say something negative about you if it kills them.

I'm almost sorry I ever heard of this hobby... Forget I even asked.

Airdave-my other hobby is the design and build of small 1:1 scale boats. My next project is a 15' or so catamaran built from a honeycomb composite material (polycore) and plastic bottles. In the course of my research I have interacted with and observed many professional naval architects on other forums. Your attitude towards Lancer is exactly like their's towards me. Make of that what you will. Merry Christmas!

yeah, I'm not sure why stating the obvious isn't acceptable
but sometimes I have a big mouth in that regard.

I didn't know what a DXF file was...now I do.
That was my main intention...
filling in the blank for anyone else who doesn't know what that type of file is
or what program is associated with it.

I don't know what "kibbitzing" means either
(lol sorry but i'm just being honest...I'll have to look it up too)

but "...just to criticize" I do understand.

My apologies, Lancer, if you feel that all you get from me is criticism.
When you asked me to design a bunch of artwork for you last month...you got exactly what you wanted, for free, and you had no complaints.
But when you don't get exactly what you want (from me)...then I'm guilty of negativity and criticism?

You asked for someone to open a DXF file but didn't state what kind of program would work...I filled in the blank for everyone...thats all.

Sorry guys...I'll do my best to stay out of this one from now on.

Pepakura could simply be buggy about DXF files. I don't know.
Send me your file, I can open it with Blender.
Cold down your temperature anyway: it doesn't help you.

Hi Lancer.

I've created .dfx files in Rhino 3D and have loaded and unfolded them in Pep.

I currently use Pep version 2 by the way.

If Pep can't handle your file try it in another program to prove the file is not at fault. Or try to save you original file in another format and see if that works.

I could try and open you file in my Pep if your'ed like to send it to me.

Cheers JTF
